Blowing smoke - confused.

Featured Replies

Ok basically my vrs blows a bit of blue smoke after sitting on idle for a brief period and i blip the throttle then it clears itself. Never smokes while driving. I've read on multiple forums that it's to do with the PCV hoses that need replacing.

However looking at my hoses tonight I could see that the Turbo to Intake hose has a slight wetness to it, and it's an oily substance.

This will obviously need to be changed, would somebody suggest what to go for?

Also could this cause the problem? The car feels fine to drive! Thanks :)

That could be due to the PCV hoses putting in oil. The crankcase ventilation goes in at the flat disc (hockey puck) thing on the TIP so could be wet inside from that.

My car is smoking a little bit like that too, it worried me at the start and I was convinced it was using oil but it isn't using very much at all and it only happens in town driving when left idle for over 2 minutes when the engine is cold. I reckon mine is either valve seals or a turbo seal.

Let me know if you find out what it is.

Thanks for replying, mine is almost the same as yours only it doesn't smoke at all from cold. It's very odd. I'm going to buy the pcv hoses and the TIP as well and replace them and fingers crossed that's the problem!

mine has also started doing this! only when hot and idle, driving no smoke , is it worth changing the tip and pcv hoses ?

Ok I decatted mine today and it sounds absolutely unreal! But as soon as it warmed up blew smoke all over the place and didn't stop. Scared the hell out of me but after 2 miles or so it cleared itself and then didn't smoke anymore. Til I got home and gave it a few small revs and smoke came out the back again though not too bad. I hate seeing my octy like this please help! I'm getting a compression test done during the week. I think the tip and pcv hoses also need to be changed as i've been reading that these exact symptoms come from worn hoses so it could possibly only be that, fingers crossed.

I only noticed mine when I decatted.

Initial smoke is probably only from any residues, putty, polish etc used in fitting the downpipe so that's nothing to worry about.

The other thing that was pointed out to me was that the reduced backpressure from changing the downpipe and removing cat could cause the turbo seals to leak a little bit more if they were on the way out. As in giving it an easier path out.

The smoke mine makes at times can be stinking and very dense but it only lasts for about 10 seconds until I rev up again. I haven't noticed it as bad since my last oil change so I think it may have been a little overfilled because I always kept it to the top of the dipstick mark. Having let it drop a little it's less noticeable.

Ah. After driving around for more than 2 hours I came back home, I literally can't drive the car anywhere with the white smoke that's coming out of it, it's stinking everybody out of it and looks like a total wreck.. I really don't have a clue what's going on with the car at this stage.

White smoke? Sure its not steam?

Definitely not, this smells really strong and it's really thick too and literally doesn't stop pouring out of the exhaust

When you decatted did you change the downpipe too?

If so, when you were at the turbo did you notice the condition of the inside around the wastegate? Was there any wet or was it dry?

As far as I know, if the oil was being combusted it would be more blue than white if it is only being heated and so vaporised it will be white. (correct me if I'm wrong)

so it sounds as if you may have oil coming into the exhaust side of turbo and once it hits extreme heat of turbo it is turning to the white smoke..

Let the car cool right down and start it again, i.e. letting the turbo cool down, if there is less smoke then that could be your problem.

if it is turbo seals it shouldn't be as bad as it sounds.

You seem to know your stuff!

I didn't change the downpipe, as it's in a right pain in the ass location to change back to the cat for the nct every year! so i got a 2.5" stainless tube and got flanges on each side, same with the cat. Now i can just put it on a ramp every year and do it with ease underneath.

By the way, it sounds absolutely awesome!

It's very hard to explain, so here's a video of its symptoms.

My poor octy :(

thts exactly what mine is doing right down to a t!

thts exactly what mine is doing right down to a t!

It's very annoying! I hope it's simply just a pipe..

Is that not clearing away at all now?

How about on boost while accelerating?

few things to try before paying for compression tests, checking turbo seals/valve stems etc.

Check over the crankcase breather system, even just where it joins the turbo intake pipe to see if there is excessive oil going into the intake.

Is the oil appropriate VW spec?

Have a look at your spark plugs, they may be badly coked up if burning oil in chamber.

Sometimes dodgy piston rings will let so much pressure by that you can feel it from the dipstick tube.

keep an eye on your oil level too, could go down very quick. Hope you find something small to sort it.

It clears on a drive, well i dont see it in the mirrors anyway, boosting perfect driving amazing, just poxy smoke. From what i can see i do need a new TIP, not sure if that's enough to stop this but definitely needed as there is a bit of oil around it. Possibly the pcv hoses need doing too, but its a costly game if they dont fix the problem.

If you check the breather piping be really careful with the pipe that comes up past the head from the crankcase and the ''Y''one that comes from the rocker cover they are both really brittle and if they're not cracked already they won't be far off it.

I actually have my old standard TIP in the shed if you think there is something up with yours. I'll be down in Galway on Monday and can throw it on a bus to cork city if you're near there?

Let me know.

Blue smoke on idle that clears when driven is usually the turbo oil seals. What happens is the oil gets pulled through when the inlet is in vac and it stops when it has boost pressure.

Check everything else first obviously

i get blue smoke on long idle, alot worse with a decat. so i have exactly the same,in the process of fitting a new turbo so shall find out if its still smoking then good times :giggle:

just call it performance smoke thats what i do

that exhaust vid sounds wicked

Thanks man! I think the car sounds unreal, not too loud but really deep! A lot of people are telling me that it's a turbo seal that's gone, so that's first priority but it's supposed to be a pig to change :( Duty calls! The looks the car gets is kinda embarrassing with all the smoke :P

turbotech do decent rebuilds cheap enough. Might be a bit far for you though

Good excuse to look into the ko4 conversions :D

Good plan! :)

Unless you plan on going beyond 220 brake a k03s is the better choice
