Fun tonneau covers, any good?

Featured Replies

I was thinking of buying a tonneau cover for my fun, There is a guy from the fun club that still makes them, I got his email address off of here,  apparently there are a few of owners on here that bought them a few years ago, so my questions are...are they any good?  I know from the pics that they look great, but are they easy to fit? and do they last?........... anyway here's a pic    john

I'm amazed he's still making them after all this time. I bought one many years ago and on the whole it's served me well. It's easy to fit as it basically just slides into the slots at the top of the bodywork. It also has a few Velcro bits but these soon came off as the Velcro is stronger than the glue holding it on. After many years some of the stitching came undone, but that is easily sorted. The main problem I've had is finding some way of holding it taught, I've never actually cracked this. An extra loop at the back with a bungee through it has helped. But the cover still tends to sag in the middle and collect water. After a downpour I have to open the tailgate and let the water run off. Also after a few years the collected water has left a stain on the tonneau. You may be cleverer than me in devising some way of keeping it taught.

Hi, I used my tonneau for around the first year or so but found the main problem related to the zips not holding & to a lesser extent the stitching. Although I've still got the cover on balance I've preferred not to use it. They are good but I'm happy with the open arrangement & like most things comes down to personal choice/preference. ;)

iv got one and its lasted a good while but the zip messed up the other day so i took it off , its an easy fix  one problem i have had with mine is it fills with a lot of water and when you drive off in the morning it floods the rear end of the truck !! anyone else had it ?

Yes ricko & that's also one of the reasons I  stopped using it. It can be difficult to maintain enough tension in the cover to prevent the water ponding effect & then you've got to displace it whilst trying to avoid just dumping it into the back. To be fair all they really add is aesthetic quality & perhaps some owners have a slightly better experience of using one over a longer period of time? :)

Yes, ricko and robk, sounds like you've had the same issues as I have. There's no satisfactory way of maintaining the tension. "Official" photos, such as the one in jetbubble's original post, always show the cover as being perfectly flat and taught. In reality they are not like that. Also water always gets in round the front end where the gaps are, so it's no use assuming anything you carry under the cover won't get wet. At best the cover keeps the worst of the rainwater at bay. Its function is mainly aesthetic, as rob says.

My Fun rotted out at the rear end of the load area. I think constant emptying of the pond on the cover onto the tailgate and this area probably contributed to the rot.

Despite all the above I keep the cover on when the Truckman's not in place, as I thnk it looks better and makes the truck marginally more practical.

I had a similar problem with a tonneau cover on a small boat and resolved it by using a fold-out washing airer in its "A" frame position. The boat was static and I can see a problem of the fairer sliding about in the load bed during transit. I have bought a square of that rubber matting with holes in (sold in Costco as play area matting for about £13 from memory) which fits perfectly even with the back seats down. It protects but also breathes i.e. let's my load bed dry out. The holes would definitely provide a means of securing the airer's feet - if I had one!

A bit Heath-Robinson, and maybe not the best aesthetics but you get the idea.

I seem to recall some time ago Tom posted some pictures of a cover that had some support from underneath.

Hi ya, nice idea but my cover is absolutely knackered, in part from being stored outside for 2 years + & at one stage providing temp cover for my home made rabbit hutch (now there's a different use!). Sorry it's no good to man nor beast but good luck with your search.  :)
