tesco momentum 99

Featured Replies

Hiya guys, just wondering what peoples opinion is on tescos momentum 99 fuel and your experiences.im currently running a standard octavia vrs. Has any users noticed and benefits in running, power etc? I usually use shell nitro v+. Thanks guys. :)

I have always used this in the Fabia from new, it is the same price as standard unleaded at BP so with the extra octane rating I personally think it is good value.

If you want premium petrol the only choices (IMO) Are Shell V and Tesco 99.

All the other super unleaded fuels for sale in the UK are 97 or 98 RON.

I only use the two 99 RON ones.

Wether you need it is a matter of opinion that could be debated until the cows come home, but I run 99 in all my petrol cars, moded/tuned for 99 and standard.

I even put it in my 1934 Morris because unleaded degrades over time so I like to start with the nighest RON I can.

My Nissan is tuned for 99RON, making about 600bhp, I notice no difference between Shell V power Nitro + or Teso Momentum 99.

Ive always used momentum99 as the car is supposed to run on premium fuel (says inside of fuel flap). Mapped on 99 aswell i reckon slightly better mpg aswell (1-2).

There is far far to big a price hike on these fuels to justify their use in ordinary cars.  Even the Mk1 Octy vRS only needs 97 RON.

I find Tesco 95 to be garbage i the car so that leaves me with momentum 99. Never had a problem with it and I get about 3mpg over the Tesco normal crud

It states 98 and above on the Fabia VRS Mk2.

Tesco 99 is only 5p / litre more expensive than there regular unleaded, and this can be pretty much recouped with the extra mpg it can produce.

with regard to cars only requiring 97 Ron, Quite a few cars specify 98 Ron min. If the manual says 95ron use that. If it says 98 Ron use that, simples :)

My S4 has been tweaked to run on 99Ron so my choice :D I also have a switchable map to run it on 102Ron but can't find any round here :( and I'm led to believe that really is bloomin expensive :D

Mk 1 VRS liked some 98 Octane regularly, Mk 2 Octy does not care and never noticed any difference on any grade of petrol.  Fabia Mk 2 needs 98 Octane or above.

Never noticed any difference between Momentum and Shell V-power so use Momentum over 90% of the time.

You'll only find 102 at race tracks, and I recall it being 30p a litre more expensive.

Thanks for the advice and opinions,as i said im running a mk1 octy vrs. Some reports ive read from seat,vw,audi owners say it made there car run awful, from smoking problems, misfiring, rough running and starting.most of them saying its cheap **** fuel and to stick to main stream garages (shell, esso,bp etc). Think i may give it a try and see how it runs.

I have used Tesco 99 in most of my cars which have required higher octane fuels, ranging from 200 - 400+bhp engines. All have run very smoothly.

I would say that anyone that experiences the problems you have described have underlying problems with their car, or even using it in cars set up for regular unleaded.

yeah probably so, I think I will give it a try and see how it goes, on my flap it says 95ron/97ron so I always use shell nitro v+. so the Tesco 99 should be ok, many thanks again.

At Silverstone it's about £2.50p per litre IIRC...

Considering I can burn a gallon per lap, I go for 99. :D

Anyone know what BP ultimate is supposed to be? i thought it was 99 like V-power?

It's 97 I think, so only half way between standard 95 and V power/Momentum 99.

If I put it in my car I have to turn the map down so I avoid it.

V power and momentum 99 are the only two 99 RON fuels available in the UK at roadside filling stations.

Some cars react differently to momentum99 / Shell V Power. Momentum contains 5% ethanol aswell as other alcohol based elements. Shell V Power contains minute amounts of these chemicals. Shell however contains certain additives similar to redex for a cleaner injection system. Also, the base petrol from which Vpower is produced is of a higher quality than that of momentum. Seen reports of some cars having hissy fits when they've been run on one type of fuel and then switched to another.

If you've access to Shell I'd use that over Tesco.

Momentum 99 for me and Shell V as a backup should it not be available

Momentum is more than fine for any car!

I think you want to believe it is much better than it is. I remember having the same conversation many months ago about the ethanol content of V Power.

It also contains up to 5% ethanol, as does all petroleum

All base petrol is the same.

Different suppliers then mix their companies selected aditives and cleaners

Even 95 is enhanced iirc

Hey I dont need to be fooled. I'm not saying one is better than the other. The composition may be different, the distillation process may be different. But in the end the octane rating is still the same. Had a look at numerous data sheets and comparisons on websites. Each one states different information.

When you want 99 RON & you can buy Momentum and it is MIN 99 Ron and for an Extra £2.25 over 45 litres of 95 RON,

why do you want to pay another extra £2.25 again to Royal Dutch Shell.?

If its just the Octane that matters!

Personally i would pay the extra to buy the Momentum over the Shell V Power Nitro, but thats just because

any problem with Pumps or wrong fueled tanks & Tesco will be Compensating PDQ,

Where Shell & their Independent Filling Station Owners like to hum and hey.

& then there is the odd Shell garages that did the profiteering during fuel shortages. Once conned, then i try to not give them the chance again.

& then there is my thinking that when I run a good engine and good quality oil & filters and buy 99 Octane Petrol,

i do not need Royal Dutch Shells secret additives, Sodium Chloride or anything of the likes.

Shell like to forget past failures. Some have long memories.

Shell should be more open on their products.
