anybody know anything about CNC RS232 connections

Featured Replies

Hi at work all the CNC's are connected either by ethernet or using RS232 connections to a bespoke system

I need to get a program off one of the old machines that is not setup

i want to plug a laptop into it and send the program to the laptop via the serial port

what software can i use to receive the file from the machine

i take it i can just plug it in start the software and send the file from the machine

not really had tto do anything with the CNC's so am a little lost

the bloke that set it up left and lest absoloutley nothing on how the system is setup :thumbdwn:

It's many a long year since I last worked with CNC machines. I seem to recall that some of them used weird codes for flow control.

You'll need some kind of data capture program to read the serial port. I used to use Kermit many years ago, but I'm not sure what's available these days.

Not much help, am I?:o

And Kermit/xmodem/ymodem/zmodem (or others) will only work if that's how the machine is sending the data. You need to look at the menus on the machine and see if any of them offers data sending "options". If it's any of the aforementioned, Hyperterminal (free with most flavours of Windows) supports them all.

thanks i will give it a try tomorrow

only pain is all the laptops i can lay my hands on none have a serial connection unless you use the docking station

bloody USB ;)

oh well

We have the same problems as we need serial ports as work and there aren't too many machines that come with them now.

You may as well get Hyperterminal Private edition from www.hilgraeve.com as it's more stable than the version included in windows.
