No Engine Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hi all.....eventually got round to Mr Muscling the car a week ago yesterday. What a difference !! Having driven round the Lakes in generally limp mode, the previous week, I wish I had done it before we left. No limp mode or any other related issues now.

However, one issue on the car which I have mentioned here previously, in the dim and distant past, remains an enigma. The engine warning light has never illuminated since I bought

the car. I took it to the good people at Revtronic in Bradford so they could check the instrument panel out (as I think it should illuminate when the ignition is switched on) .They took it out, checked it, tested it, did a computer diagnosis, found no fault at all and put it back in. They didn't charge me a penny for the work they did and I am extremely grateful for their efforts. So today I took it to a local auto electrician who did all the diagnostics and came up with the following. Apparently, when they induced an engine malfunction the glow plug light

started flashing and when they cleared the fault it went out. So they are saying that the glo plug light is the engine warning light and that the real engine warning light is redundant

on my car.Sorry, I am not convinced. Has any one else out there got a 1.9TDI with an ASV lump and no engine warning light ? My local dealer had a 2004 Octavia Ambiente 1.9TDI in (don't know engine code) and the light came on when the stores lad switched the ignition on for me (as a favour). Could it be an ECU problem (although today's check showed no faults) ? Is it just the way my car was made ? The only thing left to do is substitute my panel for a known working one (which I haven't got) and see what happens. Or maybe just live with it.

As always I would appreciate and welcome all input and information.

Regards Rob

Some fault codes trigger the glow plug light, & others the EML. Instrument output check on VCDS should illuminate all the warning lights .My guess is the EML illumination is dead on your dash cluster.

I have a similar problem, no engine warming or management light illuminates on my dash, twice it has sounded a bit rough in third going up hill then suddenly the boost goes and a big loss in power, only way to fix it is to switch the engine off and back on again.

Sorry for the post hijack but any pointers would be most appreciated as I only bought the Skoda Octavia mk1 elegance diesel about 4 hours ago :-(

The glow plug light is the eml on the diesel engines. Does it light up?

Engine noise:

1.  Check your oil level

2.  Don't drive it hard until it has warmed up

Lack of power:

Most likely an overboost fault on the turbo.  Common problem is sticky vanes.  There are various tests to determine if this is the case or not.

Welcome to Briskoda, btw :-)

Thanks for the replies gents.

@pauldazzle.....Both Revtronic and local auto elec were unable to test the eml as it wasn't included on the test programme in VCDS. (As I understand it).

@Ravihotwok.....I'm no technical expert by any means but your engine could be going in to limp mode due to sticky turbo vanes. A cheap and relatively easy cure

for this can be found in this forum under Mr Muscle Treatment. Personally I would do this as a matter of course considering the number of

successes the treatment has had for those who have done it (including me).

@trundlenut.....The glow plug light flashes on/off very quickly when the ignition is switched on.

I think I might invest in a cheap instrument panel off the bay to see if there is any difference. How about everyone who has a Mk1 1.9TDI (2001 on) with a working

eml declare it on here so we can get an idea what's the norm ?

Err had this subject before, on some or maybe all diesel's the glow plug light is the engine warning light.

Maybe its a Skoda thing. My A4 TDI has an EML & both of my VW Bora's TDI's did too.

If you swap the instrument pod the car won't start unless you have the immobiliser recoded or defeated. This weather the glow plug light should only stay on for a second. You can unplug the coolant temp sensor then it should stay on longer. If it only flickers on and off then one reason could be the 109 relay is faulty, this supplies power to the ECU and if it is faulty then all kinds of weirdness can ensue.

Thanks trundlenut. Because there are no other faults or missing dash lights etc I'm going to accept that my car is working normally and doesn't have a working EML light. Got other things to get on with

so will put this issue to bed and move on. Since the Mr Muscle treatment the car is running really well and I'm pleased about that. If the glow plug light comes on at any time I know what to do.
