Weird hid/headlight problems

Featured Replies

I have hid kit for my main beam and just got it for full beam but every time I pull the flash the mileage and trip computer switches off .... Just goes completely blank, and if I push stalk forward for permanent full beam after about 30 second my asr,oil and abs light comes on and car switches off ??? Any ideas brand new hid kits btw and have swapped and doesn't make a difference

HID and full beam do not mix, HID bulbs are not designed to turn on and off like that. Each time you flash, the ballast needs to build up a high voltage to get the light to turn on before stabilising. The bulb then needs around 10 seconds to warm up and achieve the correct colour temperature. Constantly switching on and off will cause the bulb and/or ballast to fail.

Why do you think that even cars with HID dipped beam from the factory have a standard halogen main beam, and those with Bi-Xenon lights have shutters that move within the lens and use the same bulb to achieve both main and full beam. My Audi with Bi-Xenon also has a halogen bulb, so that when I flash the headlights whilst the switch is in '0' this is used instead, so as not to wear out the bulb/ballast.

I had hid in the high beam in my old leon and never had any problems. In fact one of the dipped ballast went before the high beam ones and both were fitted at the same time. It is a pain the way they take that few seconds to warm up but I dont think they should be messing with the instrument cluster.

Are they canbus hids?

Aah I did not know they were shutter I thought they were just two bulbs I did do a search on here first too seemed there was a few people using them with no probs bummer so do you think my ballast are bust ?

That's only on cars fitted with bi xenons from the factory.

My Audi A4 (b6) used to do this. Only ever when using the full beam as I put HId'd on both main and full beam. The car never switched off but it lit up every light on the dash like a Christmas tree and It switched off the abs and traction control

Is my car canbus then I wouldn't know how to check if it was blowing bulbs I would expect that but its messing with instrument cluster and the car oil light comes on too its very strange but no neither of my hid kits are canbus but doesn't bring up warning for lights

My guess is that the inverter is putting out a nice burst of electrical noise which is upsetting all the electronics.  See what fault codes you're getting.
