Good and cheap coilies?

Featured Replies

I had a date with a pot hole a while back and managed to kill my front right suspension (shocks and possibly springs). And since they are all shot to hell anyway, i figured i'd go for a set of coilies. I was putting it off again and again until it broke. Yeah, and now i'm without a car.

Anyway, I heard good things about JOM, but they cant be bought here. I'm going to turn to ebay for this. Any other brands that are cheap and do the job well enough? I like to drive, so to speak, but its never going to be tortured on a track. As longs as it does the job for, normal use and some, lead foot driving, I'm good.

btw, here's the result of my date.

I'd stick with OEM suspension unless you have a big budget for quality coil overs

Cheap coil overs are a load of crap .

I got my Jom coilovers off ebay £189 there fine for me but can be a little bouncy at times for the money I really can't complain

Awesome gti are selling AP's for £369 if you can stretch to that. They're meant to be quite good.

I've got JOMs and while they can be abit bouncy they are still good. I'd recommend them

Good and cheap is an oxymoron. They'll either last 5 minutes before corroding and falling apart and/or the shocks will be uber-crap.

Budget around £500 for parts for a decent system.

Ap's that is all.

Ap's are better than joms - I've had both.

Yeah, well you haven't seen the prices of OEM parts over here. The set all around is 520 quid, and that's with the 15% rebate. The JOM set is 190 quid and 40 quid for shipping. I could buy two and the JOMs would still be cheaper.

Bouncy, yeah. That's what I heard too.

Had AP's on my Volvo, good stuff. But considering I'm planning to sell this car within six months, I'd rather not pay any more than I absolutely have to. I wont get the money back anyway.

Again, bouncy. So many people mention bouncy. This is not going to be a track car

I'm planning to buy a new car anyway. Just need this one for a few more months. I don't think I'll own this car long enough for the corrosion to be an issue for me. Maybe for the next owner...

EDIT: MOT is on the 20th. After that I get a great little spanish flag on my windshield.

I can't see how people can say JOM's are good, the ride quality is shocking compared to the likes of AP and things. Save your money and buy something decent, live by the rule of the thumb, buy cheap buy twice.

I do well over 2000 miles a month in mine and I agree you can't call JOMs the best in comfort but I don't regret buying them. I can't say it's more uncomfortable than any other car I've had that's been lowered. I'd sooner have the extra cash and the JOMs personally but each to their own. And as for them corroding I got mine set to the height I wanted and I've never touched them since and doubt I will

The problem with joms are they go too long on the back at highest settings, bounce like hell and have a horrible rebound so if you hit a bump the car bounces up then down. Handling wise there are not bad

Dear god, the JOM's sound terrible just from the descriptions here, they sound like they're all show and no go.

Why don't you just rebuild the standard suspension with Eibach pro springs and OE bilstein dampers if needed, you can order all the parts from Germany very cheaply.

You're also going to need a top mount and seal carrier since I can clearly see it got broken when you hit that pothole.

Pretty obvious that aps are going to be better than joms as theyre nearly double the cost lol

Ive got pro sport coilovers on my vrs (previous owner fitted them) they're ok bit harsh but that could be a combination of low profile tyres and how low the car is! Sump cover is about 3-4cm off the ground at a guess although im doing away with the cover as its smashed to bits and hanging off almost lol

I think id go for FK coilovers or APs when these need replacing.

Fks I had on a mk4 golf they only cost 170 from venom motorsport but they are very good not crashy at all quite comfortable alot better than other brands of cheap coilovers!

Right, so I swapped out the front suspension to OEM. Decided not to risk failing the MOT because of the coilies. Took the car down to the shop so they could do an alignment and it was pretty buggered. Bloke told me he couldn't align it properly. Said it was, and I quote, "shot to hell and back".

So I did take a trip into a ditch a few months ago, but I checked the car and i didn't see or feel anything wrong. That said, I've driven it less than 50 kilometres since the first accident. Turns out these two accidents did more damage than I thought. Car's down at the shop at the moment, decided to involve the insurance company too. And it looks like they're going to replace most of the running gear. Assuming the insurance company doesn't decide to write it off. Which is looking more and more likely.

Yeah, sucks owning such a cheap car, every time the insurance company is involved it risks getting written off.
