Orange Oil Light (partially illuminated with lights on)

Featured Replies

As per title I got into car tonight and pointed it at McDonalds and instantly (for first time) the orange oil light slightly is illuminated...... Oil level is fine and it goes off when I turn down to sidelight position even though cluster is still lit up the same. Won't come out on camera but I can sure as fish see it!

Sequence is:

Headlights off = no sign of light

Switch to sidelights only from off = light on approx half

Switch to dipped headlights = light on approx half

Switch back down to sidelights = it goes out instantly every time

Anyone had this before or have I been missing it every time for 2.5 years so far? It is like there is light from something else in there bleeding towards it rather than power to the actual light itself being involved, but can't be 100% sure.

I have a all night drive this week to do in it and it will really REALLY get on my nipples, to the point I might hire a car as I know I would be fuming after 26 hours behind the wheel.

Really didn't show up at all on any of the 20 odd pics I took but you can just see it sort of in this one but it's 10 times brighter in real life

Get the car scanned for errors just in case it should be lit but the LED is knackered.

Otherwise maybe something has shifted behind the panel to allow the light to bleed across. Will be a bitch to get to and probably £$£$ for that reason.

Checked today and no errors, that light doesn't come on on start up sequence only when oil low and should be accompanied by some bong sounds. Triple checked oil and still spot on too. Light bleeding across is what it appears to be but only it's making no sense as per the sequence above will do it in side light position when turned on to it but goes out when turned back down to it from dipped headlights.... nuts!

Car is still under initial 3 year warranty and have an extra 2 years unlimited miles I added when ordered it, just don't have the time to bring it anywhere if they will need to muck about with it. I know what is going to happen when going to a dealers as it needs to be basically pitch black night time to see it...... Car has had a very easy life on nice smooth roads 90% of time and it's 17700 miles have been 3000 on my recent road trip and 12500 driving it home and back 4 times.

Could this be a sign to get the Mk3?

Nah, Sh$t happens. If it's got warranty use it. you've paid for it after all.

UK car, so need to be in UK to use it after 2 years old bahhhhh.

Had a similar problem with mine, 2011 vrs, but it was lighting up the indicator and tyre pressure warning lights. Took it back to the dealer, who replaced the clocks, as apparently the backing was coming off, allowing the light to spill over.

Cheers, if that is what it is I hope it gets replaced hassle free. We might have had a dodgy batch out of the factory mine was delivered to UK in March 2011.

Could well be, mine was a June 2011. I'd get back to the dealer, mine is Gordon Lamb at chesterfield they were excellent!

1 hour into a through the night drive it vanished and remained nice and black...... I will monitor it closely now.

Mine did the same bout a month after the air sensor went faulty sits ontop of the engine trying to remeber correct part but was to do with monitoring dof pressure might be just a coinsidence

Lights on:

New phone since then and was able to play with exposure to pick it up properly this time. Should make dealer visit easier than the "we can't see anything" that I would expect otherwise, understandably.

Hi,

Notice this is partly the same issue as mine! The same light and my indicator are partially lit. But it also goes away completely. Mine is a Mk2 VRS, under warranty, currently car is at auto electricians, typically not doing it but I know it will come back!

Have you gotten to the solution yet?

Thanks

Mike

Mate that is freaky! Mine is doing the same as yours the other week!!! Left indicator arrow came on too then right one when cruise control on, then the indicator ones go out again and the orange light remains half on etc. This happens in random combinations. I have it booked into main dealers in a couple of weeks when they have a courtesy car available for me.

I think it's an electrical problem now as the randomness of when and what order things happen! Mine makes no difference if door is open or not.

I also emailed these pics and a few videos of it to my dealers, in case the same as you it didn't do it when it's in. They have booked it in for 2 days in case it needs a new cluster ordered. I hope they can do it that fast! Take these pictures and say it's exactly the same as this!

I will keep  you updated as to what happens with mine, if you could do the same with yours, hopefully we get this crap sorted!

Hi mate,

would be interested to hear your outcome on this?

I picked my car up Saturday, was fine. Out and about all weekend, fine. Then Sunday night it happened. Driving to work Monday it was present, but flickered off all fine after about 40min driving. It was back Monday evening, and all day Tuesday.

My Dad took it back to dealer on Wednesday, guess what? didnt do it all the way there, not done it since? So im collecting it tonight and see how i go?

Its annoying more than anything... doesnt effect the cars performance etc. I have a warranty and will extend it so im covered but cant see why im without the car when its not doing this?

Two questions..

1. Mine has factory upgrade directional xenons, has yours? Im wondering if this is a loading issue on electrics?

2. My adjuster for dash lighting is also not working? But nothing showing up as to why on the diagnostics?

Yes, i will keep you upto date as well... be interesting to see what is at fault?

I don't have xenons and dash light adjustment working fine.

Typical, as soon as I got there, I get in car, turned lights on and hey presto the indicator partially illuminates!

Going to ingnore it for now, I've only had the car a week, 3 days of which I've been in a curtosy car, which was terrible :( I know the dealer was doing his best, but sounds like the eletrician done nothing other than flash the ECU. I wish he'd tried all the bulbs, and earths etc as I'm convinced that's what it is?

I will take to my local electrician on Tuesday if it's doing it! But for now just want to enjoy the car, it's a light on, it's annoying and I will rationalise that for now.

Will defo get to bottom of it.. I think we have the same fault though for sure! Will let you know how I get on?

Mike

Mate, I'm now almost convinced this is an earth issue!

Tonight, while lights where on, and the left indicator light semi illuminated, I got to thinking, this must be indicator?

Long story short, if a waggle and play around with the wires around the rear passenger light... I can get the half illuminated indicator to flicker, and almost go out!

Will mention this to my automotive electrician on Tuesday. It really frustrates me why my dealer didn't try this... It's most obvious first port to check! Hope it's this easy?

Rear passenger light, as in the one in roof lining? Mine does it with and without headlights on at random with no effect from doors being opened or closed etc. Real pain in the hoop!

Mine only shows the half illuminated indicator on full lights. Nothing when off, or half lights.

The oil light shows half illuminated when ignition on.

But.. Rear inside passenger rear light, there's an access door in boot, and I waggled the wires and the indicator light and the oil light flickered. They are both now currently hardly lit atall. I'm convinced this is all earth related?

We will see?

Damn you, I am not contemplating going out on a cold sleety night to do same lol!

Hi Mate How did it goes at the Dealers any joy with resolving the Dash lights issue.??

I had the back end of my Vrs apart to fit a towbar and electrics didnt find anything untoward with the electrics back there either defo at a dead end now.

Only thing i`ve noticed is i quite often get one of the little rear side lights down the outside of both rear lights to not function correctly. but thats not causing me any issues even cleaned up the bulb holder connections.

Cheers.

No dramas with any of my actual lights, car had been kept in another night :( So far something along the lines of for dash faults the prescribed first port of call is a wiring check which has been done and nothing wrong there, pics etc been passed on to SUK to see if they are aware of anything similar happening others and awaiting a reply. Will update when I know more.

Cool beans chap, I hope they don't charge you a fortune and I'm sure suk will know of this fault but deny it.

Mines a 59 plate 38k fssh but have seen a few 11 plate cars with same faults now so it's not a specific build year or supplier issue although it seems to be a vrrs specific issue.?? So could be a stocked item with inherent faults maybe.

I've done some more tests tonight using vagcom (genuine one) to control individual warning lights on the dash. If I turn on only the signal for the low fuel level light then all the other dash functions are off and I get the left indicator and low oil level light on too.

This also happens with low washer fluid light. When doing this if I indicate then I don't get the cruise control light on.

So my thinking is that one of the electrical components on the dash maybe a triac or transitor & diodes which mostly control voltage flow across circuits for current flow/ direction ( if that makes sense as a non contact switch maybe fault and allowing voltage to get parts of the dash lights it shouldn't.. That's why other lights come on.

I've had my dials apart before and visually inspected the components but there was nothing obviously at fault like has been seen on the mk1 dashes that fail. You tube etc..

So next step is to possibly try and individually test the pcb components.. Ooh what fun there's hundreds. lol. Or just admit defeat and by a new instrument cluster.

Cheers.

Mine is still under 3 years old sub 23K, so it's all on Skoda. I also paid for 5 year warranty when I ordered car from new. It seems to be an issue that's popped up fairly recently as far as this forum is concerned it's only of late it's been reported on here by owners which is strange! Your logic on it sounds good to me, I hope they find out what it is, but I can't see a main dealer opening the cluster and trouble shooting the actual part.
