Newbie: I have no power below 1500 rpm Octavia VRS TDI

Featured Replies

Hi I have followed Briskoda for many years but find my problem is not listed. As the title suggests I have a Skoda Octavia VRS TDI 07 plate with 140,000 miles. My problem is no power below 1500rpm. If I pull out of a junction I have to be revving above 1500rpm to pull away. Also when I am doing 30 mph in traffic I need to be in 3rd gear rather than 4th as 3rd gear brings my revs to 2000 rpm. The car has had the PDF deleted and removed. I have had the injectors replaced( recall) egr valve cleaned, new fuel filter, new inlet manifold. The car has just come back from the local VW, Audi, Merc garage and they don't know what the problem is. I am stuck on where to turn. We have had a new Skoda dealership setup recently, my next thought is to take it to them. Any ideas or experiences would be most gratefully received. Thanks Dale

could be sticky vanes in the turbo.

I currently have no power at low revs and when i boot it i dont get the kick. Hence the need for some mr muscle and someone who knows where to put it in a pd170. None of the guides actually show it

Sounds like it could be sticky turbo vanes, but it'd be worth ruling out the MAF sensor by unplugging it and seeing if there is any improvement in performance.

I tried the above. Did get an improvement. Replaced the Maf sensor and still had the issues :(

+1 on the mr muscle plan, where and how?

I would also like to see a more detailed guide on using mr muscle on the pd170. I have sticky turbo vanes and a thin wallet. :-)

Very interested that most replies point to sticky turbo vanes. The turbo does wail alot but it still keeps going and pulls very well above 1500rpm!!  The EGR was carbonised up as was the intake manifold swirl flaps so i assume the turbo could well be next in line.  Any idea on costings for a new turbo supplied and fitted.

A recon turbo including fitting, would be at least £500.

I've been looking into fixing the sticky turbo vane problem with MR Muscle and found this page amoung many:

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a4-s4-forum-b5-chassis/107121-un-sticking-your-tdi-vnt-turbo-vanes.html

It mentions exactly how and where to spray Mr Muscle.

Enjoy..

There's a few threads like this floating around but we're after a guide for the pd170 lump as there's a chuf load more plumbing on then so easy to get it wrong.

Many thanks for all your help on this topic. I think I'll get the turbo removed and cleaned and go from there. Still not sure how the turbo has anything to do with no power at lower revs because the turbo kicks in at 1500 rpm. The problems I am having are no power below 1500 rpm. I'll get it cleaned and see how it goes.

This is not the case with the variable vane turbo on a PD engine. If you floor the throttle at low rpm, you see boost building from 1100 RPM......by 1250 RPM there is a useful amount of boost produced.

Cheers for letting me know that. I wouldn't have thought the boost kicks in that early. Possibly because it hasn't driven well for a while!!

Thanks again

If the vanes are sticking then tend to do it in the low speed high boost position which then leads to overboost and limp mode at high rpm. This doesn't produce much difference in performance at lower rpm. Alternatively it can stick the high rpm low boost setting which would give you more turbo lag. The latter can also trigger an under boost fault.

I would say that it is hard to detect the low down boost just by feel alone.

I only know there is low down boost because I have run a VCDS log monitoring boost pressure.....at 1200 rpm at full throttle, you see about 3.5 psi boost on a PD140.

Well I found online a product called Revive Turbo Cleaner which I ordered through Ebay. I've ran it through the air intake through the turbo. It seems to have improved top end turbo power but I still have no low end power below 1500 rpm. Just because it didn't the fix the problem on my car, I still rate the product highly. It just seems my car is more carbonised than the majority. Ithink the only fix is a replacement turbo. The problem must be down to the turbo!! Also the turbo is getting louder and it isn't a clean whoosh sound it's more of a wail and I' read the posts ref turbo wail. I've requested prices for a recon/ exchange turbo from everyone online I could find. So we'll see what comes back. Any recommendations from you guys on best suppliers to use?

Here's an update on the below 1500 fiasco!!

I've had the turbo taken off the engine-£250 later! The mechanic looking for carbonised variable vanes found no such thing!! All vanes were completely free from any carbon! So the turbo was massively cleaned up with new pipes and gaskets, put back on and driven up the road. Still no power below 1500 rpm but lots and lots of smooth not juddery as before power! Still the engine Ecu doesn't show any codes to diagnose and point to a sensor. Also I had to have an ABS product replaced as the ABS light came on just as it went into the garage!! sods law!! Next job is to take it back to where I had the PDF delete mapped and get them to sort the no power below 1500rpm. It's crazy, I've probably spent the value of the car recently. But at the moment when I drive it- I really just don't care! Must be the "Skoda Touch". My mrs certainly doesn't understand!!

Where was the map and dpf done?

Did you manage to get this no power sorted as mine has started doing the same

I did exactly the same to mine and the result is exactly the same. Checked all the pipes for air leaks. Nothing on the forum tells how to correct it. I'm baffled!

Hello dalemiow, have you managed to sort out the issue? I'm having sort of the same problem on a Renault 1.9 DPF. I could give you some ideas that I've tried on my car, maybe they'll work for you.

anyone had a fix for this problem ?

my cars doing this atm replaced

MAP sensor

MAF sensor

N75

Checked timing and torsion value

New turbo

brought the car cheap off a family friend due to this issue but 2 weeks down the line its still not left the garden due to the no boost from 800rpm to 2000rpm after that it boosts an but not how it should I've logged the car on vcds and the log is fine always has to be above 1500 to attempt to pull away had a guy tell me ECU is breaking up but this has been the only threat i can find with the same issue thanks in advance

Any progress on this issue??i have a thread here called 170pd vrs basically my car is the same I’ve actually replaced injectors,Ecu,brand new turbo, everything I can possibly think off and still no difference I got the lend of a identical car for switching parts that was running perfect and I transferred all sensors and still no joy only thing I noticed different was in live data with diagnostic my lamba was crazy high compared to the donar car I’ve had mine over 2 years I bought it with this issue and only look at it every few months then get annoyed wit it and just hide it out off my sight ,Did anyone figure out the cause yet

Sorted pre turbo exhaust temp sensor was reading 1000degrees replaced sensor and all full of life again, she finally fights and lives on after 2 years parked up .i had no faults due to my dpf egr delete map and fault codes were blocked I seen fault in live data
