How easy to replace HID bulbs?

Featured Replies

I'm on a one man mission to rid the forum of the misconceived attitude that anything other than 4300 offers 'less' light - for further info see http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/279389-d1s-xenon-bulbs/

I was talking about the "Cool Blue" halogen bulbs.  :)

Gonna bump my own thread with a quick follow up question :)

So changing Xenon bulbs is apparently not really different from replacing Halogen. So remove the light cluster from the vehicle and change.

I did find the Mk2 guide on this site:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/64315-howto-new-octavia-headlight-bulb-change/page-2

And I'm going to assume that the FL is done in the same way?

At one point during this process it says to "unscrew" a couple of holding screws. The picture isn't really detailed enough to indicate what type of screws these are. Does anyone know if they are something standard, say like a "Philips" or is it something a little more specialised and I'd require a different tool to complete this stage?

Cheers.

And I'm going to assume that the FL is done in the same way?

Yes, more or less. The main difference seems to be that the FL doesn't have any screws holding the bulb.

You don't need any tools at all to do this job, altough a pair of pliers might be useful if the previous guy overtightened the plastic nut.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled the D1S bulb several times on both sides. Not because I've had to change them, but because I've tried out a bunch of different sidelight bulbs. Removing the D1S first gives you a bit more room to work. It takes maybe all of two seconds to do.

A little word of warning though. Xenon bulbs are pressurized and can explode if you manage to break them. If you want to be extra careful, use protective eyewear. Personally I've handled countless xenon bulbs and never bothered with any of that, but just so you can't say I didn't warn you. :)

Thank you for the warning and I'll heed it.

Could do with 2 working eyes :)

Well I can go and get the failed bulb replaced for free - so I'd have a set of working 4300k.

If the 5000k bulbs I've seen are the ones mentioned above:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121114928304?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Then that would be £65 to try the 5000k bulbs instead. I guess if I like the 5000k I can sell the original ones or if I really don't like the 5000k I could resell those - obviously as used and not for the same price, but recoup some of it.

WARNING: These are Fake bulbs...Not made by Osram

Hi there,

May I ask what proof you have that these are fake bulbs?

There are numerous things to look for when it comes to fake bulbs - the obvious being the same serial number on each bulb etc. The numbers should also all be in upper case and none in lower.

There are then other things to look for - the cut glass at the top of the bulb being clear on a real bulb and frosted on a fake.

The chamber in the middle of the bulb should have an oval shape and not squared edges to it.

The anti-glare part of the bulb should be totally straight and in the correct position to stop glare.

The bulbs listed pass all of these tests. But you have proof otherwise?

Actually - that sounded almost sarcastic - it was a genuine question. Cheers.

I read the feedback of buyers who were not satisfied due to them being fake and I applied common sense

http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=muehl.007&iid=-1&de=off&items=25&which=negative&interval=180&_trkparms=negative_180

...and this price is for a pair!!

There is no way that Osram would sell their own HiD bulbs at that price..

These ARE genuine:  http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/Osram-Xenarc-D1S-Upgrade-Cool-Blue-Intense-Bulb.html

and are for a single bulb.

He's had 4 negative reviews in 12 months - compared to a lot more positive ones.

So why assume those 4 are correct and the 1000+ positive responses are incorrect? Rather large leap of faith there.

The dual packs are a correct packaging option from Osram (confirmed on other sites) and pricing varies an incredible amount amongst EU member states.

Not saying these aren't fake - but just saying it's a massive leap of faith to go from 4 negative feedbacks from a pool of 1000+ to "these must be fake".

Slightly OT but.......

I seem to remember someone taking a 'leap of faith' asserting that all Columbus/MFD3 stereos on ebay are stolen

No - thank you for your complete and utter waste of time post - with the proof to back up the call of "fake" and the constructive post as to why they will be etc.

Most appreciated!

Why is this a waste of time?

Please explain.

Price is the first thing.

HID bulbs for the octavia in most places start at around £70 PER BULB
