REAR BRAKE CYLINDER MYSTERY

Featured Replies

Can anyone solve the mystery of which is the correct replacement cylinder to fit please on the rear drums on my 2004, 1.2, 8V Fab?

My local factor has offered 2 alternatives that have the same part number. They say either will fit but I would appreciate confirmation before I make a purchase : One alternative is made from al. alloy and has one tapped hole for securing to the back plate. The other is made of steel (or cast iron?) and has two tapped holes.

The fitted leaking cylinder is al. alloy and is held on by one fixing screw. In all other respects it looks like both alternatives.

The cylinder with 2 tapped holes is one quarter of the price of the other one, hence my interest in it.

Thanks for your help.

Well this is the back of a wheel cylinder recently removed from an '05 reg 1.2 12v.  Yours is either not a 1.2 or hasn't got 8 valves by the way.

I can't see why an extra tapped hole is going to be any problem.

Can't see why iron would be inferior to alloy either, except for a handful of grams of extra weight.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the reply Wino.  Oooops sorry, I meant 12V (AZQ engine). I'll go for the 2 tapped holes.

I think the 2 tapped holes are for universal fitting either the passenger or driver side, because if your fixing has only one tapped hole and it's off centre you would have to order either a LH or RH, hence the dual fixing.
