  • did you read the packaging it came in? IME, to cut costs, instructions/ manuals have been done away with. The products now seem to have a web address on the outer packaging that directs you to an onli

According to the news today, Tesco are launching their own branded tablet - no real details or price yet - but after the fun I mentioned above, I wont be buying one on online, if at all.

I've had a look at a few from the recommendations here and thinkl i'll go for the new Nexus 7, one question as i've  never had a tablet before so do i need securty software for it?

Cheers

Kit :)

you can install something like Lookout which seems well regarded, and is free from google play

Cheers for that :)

Tesco's new 7" tablet is the Hudl - due at the end on the month. It appears to be a decent spec for £119 - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2013/09/23/tesco-hudl-review-first-look/

I'm looking for one like this to double-up as a sat-nav (GPS on my phone is poor) and for holiday use for the kids. The reviews so far have been quite positive, but I'll see what they say when it's available for sale

Yes the Tesco tablet looks ok, but has the draw back of being Android.  Android really is a miserable OS for tablets.

that's an advantage if you already have lots of google apps bought. I have 2 android tablets, not at all miserable.

The Hudl is for the Hudl'ed masses - and doeasnt have GPS.

Satnav use was the reason I bought my Acer B1, it picks up the sat signal really quickly, despite some reviews saying the GPS reception was weak

According to the Tesco press release it does - http://www.tescoplc.com/index.asp?pageid=17&newsid=806

Lack of GPS is what puts me off a cheap(ish) tablet like the Nook HD. Reviews of the Nexus 7 seem to indicate problems with the GPS on that, plus not have expandable storage is a bit of a limitation for holiday use.

I bought a nook hd for my mum. It's really very impressive, lack of GPS and front camera aside

I stand corrected then, the early "preview" review I read claimed there was no GPS.

Android's tablet os is not s slick as the phone version, but still good. I'd recommend Lookout security, but you'll need the paid version to run on two devices, but tbh at the typical app price of a few £££s compared the the rip off PC protection software it's a no brainer.

Err, I have a nexus 4 and my mother in law has a nexus 7. The OS is the same.

when people talk about the OS not being slick I presuem they mean the user interface. But you do realise you can install a new one? I use Go Launcher EX and so I have the same user interface on my Motorola Xoom, Nexus 7 and my Galaxy S4. Having the same interface on all three is really useful as you onky need to remember the one way of doing things.

I don't know, while I prefer iOS, I like Android well enough on my Galaxy S3 phone, but just do not enjoy using it on my Galaxy Tab.

Does the new nexus 7 have wifi AND 3g as standard? or is there a wifi only model andf a wifi AND 3g one? Having trouble trying to find out!!

Cheers

So the new one doesnt have it? The spec list says " you can connect from anywhere" with dual band wifi!!...means nothing to me. Just want to make sure im not just restricted to wifi when im out and about as wifi not everywhere!

Cheers

Dual band WiFi will mean it does b/g/n and a, which I think is more common in the US.

3g is a separate model, same as with the ipad
