New Tablet

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new tablet and have come across the Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 2. I've never had a Sumvision product so not sure whether they are good or not. It is the 7.9" screen model which retails at £149.99. I currently have a HP Touchpad running Android but I'm looking for something newer and preferably smaller.

What's your opinions? I am open to alternatives too, just don't said Apple please.

Cheers

  • did you read the packaging it came in? IME, to cut costs, instructions/ manuals have been done away with. The products now seem to have a web address on the outer packaging that directs you to an onli

I have a nexus 7 android which is ok but Apple is better.

There are some great clearance deals on v1 nexus 7's

Sumvision stuff is hit and miss, some is great and other stuff is tat.

The BIG problem is will they continue to support it and push upgrades to the OS??

The new Nexus is coming out and is barely more expensive, I would save your money and wait for it.

Windows 8.1 for me im afraid to say. Not a fan mac os or android..... but will have to agree with gentlegiant......nexus is far better hardware and at little extra cost....

HP have a deal on with cashback on their 7" slate

It won't be as high performance as a Nexus7 or iPad but not bad for the money.

I'd probably be looking at a v1 Nexus7 if the clearance deals are good.

+1 on GG's summary of Sumvision. They've been around quite a while doing PC componants. Budget stuff but reasonable. £149 isn't that cheap when a Nexus is £139 and likely a lot better.

What about the new Asus memo pad HD 7? Asus make the Nexus 7's so they know about tablets.

Very similar to the Nexus 7 (mk1), but with a Micro SD card slot so the memory can be expanded.

Retail price is £129 and it' gets a good write up in the press:

I've just bit the bullet and gone for the Nexus 7 (mk2), but I very nearly bought the above.

I picked up a cheap and cheerful Acer B1 for £89 (£20 cash back); it does what I want - sat nav and games for the baby - and with ~8 hours of battery life. Acer have already replaced it though, even though it was only brought out 6 months ago.

Nice. But the problem with tech these days is that its made cheap and cheerfully...... I still remember purchasing my IBM (Yes, it was one of the last ones) Thinkpad and it costing me alot.......I can safely say i sold the thing about a year ago and from what i know, its still running linux today..... The machine itself it about 6 to 7 years old......

You could do a lot worse than a 9" Nook HD+ for £129 - they now have access to the full android marketplace and are very nicely made.

I wouldn't touch any no-name or cheapo tablet with a bargepole when you can get quality hardware for the same sort of money.

I got myself a 7" Prestigio 3970B from Asda for £57 a few weeks back, I honestly can't fault it, does everything I need it to do.

Wrong thread, try the one on pressure cookers.

No I have a wife for that!

Perfect. Trying to convince missus to do that!

Not really a tablet but I just bought a kindle fire HD.

The 32gb 8.9inch one. Must say I'm very happy with it

it does all I need it to do. Picture quality and battery life are very good.

I like watching netflix while I'm sitting in the bath.  I have a cover that doubles as

a stand so I sit it on the waste bin.

I've a Samsung Galaxy Tab II 7" or something like that. It is a bit underpowered and isn't high def. But it has a micro SD slot and a reasonably bright screen. It surfs OK and plays video fine. But the two things that swung it for me, are it is very cheap (and so a bit less to worry about when carting about the country and using it outdoors in the winter) and it plays SKO Go stuff. I am told many tablets won't play SKY Go (something that is screen size dependant) so it is something to look at if you intend to use this feature from SKY (I gather many or most 10" tablets can't play SKY Go movies for instance?)

Interesting point re Sky Go.  I got a cheapo Archos 80 Cobalt for £60 the other month - 8" Android ICS and it has been great - cheap, easy to lug about, dual core processor, SD slot etc. and it does everything that I need (including playing downloaded movies well) - Except work with Sky Go...   there is no reason for this other than Sky being a pain and not making their app open to anything more than a few select tablets.  They use the excuse of screen size but I'm not really convinced on that (my netbook plays stuff fine as does my desktop...) and will not allow the app to be installed on a device with a HD output (boo hiss!)...

Thanks for all your suggestions so far.  Keep em coming.  Hadn't even thought of the Nook.

Where did you pick this up from?  I missed out on them when Tesco were selling them for £50.  Would be ideal for the missus.

I also missed out on those from Tesco at that price.  Some stores did still have them in up to a couple of months ago (but at a higher price) so I eventually picked two up (one for me and one for my Cousin) from ebay.

If you do get one make sure you download and install the update for it from the Archos website - it fixes a couple fo issues.

Also be wary of the Archos 80 Titanium - I've heard it has pretty poor wifi due to the metal back plate - my COlbalt has no such issue.

Does anyone know if the Acer A1 is any good? Think its at about £150.

Cheers

I had issues with Tesco;

1/ they STILL wont send me a receipt for my Acer B1, despite requesting it via email AND by phone 4-5 times.

2/ having complained that they were taking so long I had missed out on Acers "cash back" offer, they promised to credit the loss to my card - that never happened either.

Tesco......Always stealing from people!!!

Amazon in my view are the best place to purchase anything tablet wise....Missus is looking for a tablet at the moment and so i will look at getting her a MS RT....

Tesco are selling the Asus 10 memo pad. It's old the Google nexus technology but at £210 is a bit of a bargain. Screen is not as good as the nexus versions, but a 7" tablet for the same money males no sense to me.
