Vrs Rally

Featured Replies

Quick question from an outsider..

What's the difference between a vRS and vRS rally? Is it just the paint job?

And, what's the general view on FWD vs 4WD for Octavia's? (If you look left, you'll appreciate I might be biased...!)

Thanks

the fwd octavia's have less grip than the 4x4s... (obviously) but bizarrly you cant get a 4x4 in sporty trim from the factory....

4x4 is slow top end due to gearing.... other than that not a lot

vRS and vRS WRC (or Rally):

Yeah, different paint job, limited run of 100 vehicles, heated front seats, Xenon headlights. I'm sure one of the owners will add anything I've missed... :)

So, [sounding a bit dim] is the vRS FWD? If so, why isn't it 4WD? I would have thought, as the performance version of the range then offering 4WD would be best...

Yep, it's FWD....as to why.......don't know either. 4x4....should have been.

Yeah, vRS is FWD.

4WD's all well and good, but adds to cost, weight and transmission losses. The 4x4 isn't permanent AWD either, so is a good comprimise if you couldn't live without it.

I'd say it doesn't make a whole lot of difference though, the vRS seems to compare well in terms of overall performance to Scoobies.

Rob.

depends what you wantt to do with it.. i dont feel too compromised by the lack of 4wd... have outpaced many a scoob on the circuit... on bumpy back roads its more of a challange...

Cough! Er, well I'm sure you're right, but hope you don't think that's a Scoobypoo on the left..!;)

to clarify ffelans comment - shorter geared 4x4 is *faster* at the bottom end, but RS is *faster* at the top end.

Frankly, the shorter gearing of the 4x4 would be too much for a fwd car - it's a bit angry and short geared for 4wd in first!

4x4 and RS have equal grip with equal wheels.. 4wd gives better traction.

Suspension - depends if you want fast country road or track use. The fully independant setup the 4x4 has is a better solution, but if you are going to drop it and give it a rigid spring \a damper setup, the torsion beam of the fwd cars won't prove a problem.

The gearing and suspension differences tie in to two styles of fast driving - the RS is great on open A roads \ track, whereas the 4x4 is more at home on country roads with tight corners (and wet \ mud etc).

Decide where you you enjoy your hunting, and buy accordingly.

we were trying to be nonconfrontational... come out to play with us and see if the evo measures up....!

;)

:D

No, just it tends to be Scoobies and Octavias on our runs, so that's what I have to compare. We did have an Evo turn up a few times, but it kept destroying it's exhaust on the bumps... ;)

Sure it is... Doesn't your name stevo6 give it away ;)

Oh, and welcome to the forums. Are you checking out the competition or are you tempted to switch?

"The Rally" or WRC spec also has ESP which tackles your stability, as per the 4wd model, basically a bit of active rear braking to give that "dinky" car feeling when grip limits are exceeded. There are the full technical descriptions posted on the boards somewhere :D

4x4 v vRS

Both are capable, if your after doing alot to it, perhaps the vRS is a better glove. I have the 4x4 and it has an advantage on some roads. Tracks maybe not to be honest, required work to get it up to a good sensible/hot spec.

I took the 4x4 primarily as it was an estate, vRS was not in estate form, had it been then maybe I would of gone vRS. Both cars can get good increases in power, initially via the chiping route to the 220-240 range.

Out in Wales, both are equally matched, Jon's vRS keeping up and vice versa, lead car always taking a hit on danger to speed ratios. Overtaking, maybe I had the slight edge, long stretches gave Jon a good leg up. That said we both have upratedsuspension, stock 4x4 is very soft, yet strangly capable on bumpy B's.

Whereabouts are you? Perhaps a few minutes in each could be arranged. I know I was looking (coming from a Primera GT) had an evening out in one and made my choice.

At the end of the day it's 12k (6 month old example), for 2k it can be 220+bhp, very good suspension, fairly good braking. Keeps up with WRX scoobies all day. A bit more and you get this and that and so on as with all cars of course.

Both good vehicles, 4x4 needs work IMO to make it into a sporty model, but very rewarding. vRS good as it is out of the dealers. The rallye version has the extra toys, but only in white!

Hope that helps.

Not trying to be confrontational. Get enough of that nonsense on the MLR forum at the moment...

Considering a switch actually. Need something a bit cheaper to run than the Evo at the moment. Always liked the look of the RS, and I know they go well. Good compromise I'm thinking, and will do OK on track too by all accounts.

Quite fancy this Jabba remap, decent exhaust, filter etc, WRC style spoiler maybe.

Be interested to hear opinions on vRS, esp versus other cars you've driven...

Oh, thanks for letting me in!

Now I'm confused - I'm sure I saw some Rally's in red and other colours on Skoda.co.uk? And do you have to have the Skoda graphics on it? If it's just white, then no problem. Graphics are horrid though...!

Ah...the colour is "Rally Red"...the Rally version is usually called "WRC" to stop it getting confused. Some people have had the graphics removed, so it's just white with some green bits - looks better than it sounds! ;)

Rob.

...we've had a look at the "fun and games" on MLR.......interesting.;)

Welcome and feel free to ask questions. Plenty of peeps who've modded their cars.

Everyones friendly and willing to share experience/knowledge.......no "putting down" of newbies unlike some forums we could mention (not MLR I might add).

Enjoy!

Cheers.

Adrian.

I don't suppose you'll be interested to find out how it compares to a Renault Laguna? ;)

There are quite a few people here who traded in their scoobies and never regretted it. Running costs are much, much lower and potential is just as good (although 3rd party styling wise a lot can be improved) for tuning.

Steve we are out tonight around lancs,

we are on the rpm tour at the end of the month around s wales..

Thanks for the invites. I'm in London - so prob a bit far to go...!

I'm still not sure if people are saying the Rally is worth going for or not. Is ESP the only real extra?

Also, (questions, questions!) does anyone sell a front bumper the same as the WRC cars?

Well, do you think the WRC edition is worth going for? Easy way to tell is test driving the normal vRS, the WRC edition and the 4x4... :)

Think some people are looking for more substantial front bumpers, have a look on the "my Styling" section...

Rob.

Yep..... Erik is looking at have a WRC style front bumper made up. Not sure of timings though.

Erik?

Graham (Bandit1) or SixySixOfOneHundred could give you the low down on the WRC edition. A new one is a lot more than a "normal" RS...I think the difference was around

erm, in my view yes. However I think the actually spec sheet is quite a bit longer. Also there are only a limited number of them, 100 in fact. We know of a few, look up sixtysixofonhundred and drop him (Gary) a PM. They sold for an extra 5k on list price. Personally I don't think the benefits outweighted the price tag, but I would still of considered one for the sheer 100 nature.

London, it's not that far to a few keen vRS owners, a bit far for a thursday evening blast around Manchester yes...sure uncle Tavia will be along soon...have a look at the RPM tour post in meets and events, a good day out anyway for your Evo :D and I'm not on commission.

Hope that clears a few more bits up.

As to the bumper, yes they are been looked into.

A nice big FMIC is under going testing to fill the gap (custom built for Tavia's)

348BHP is the biggest figure I have seen on the web for a moddifed Skoda, it's the 4x4 aswell. Followed by a yellow vRS which I recall is still for sale @20k somewhere. Enjoy searching, everything is here, just seek it out :D

Here's the first one for you :D

/edit, really must type faster again.

Sounds to me like vRS is prob one to go for - then

The WRC is tops on everything, most of the guys having been getting mods just to catch up, done nothing to the car over the last year except reversing sensors, which by the way is a must. The Wrc has uprated suspension and brakes, slightly lower than the vRS and factory chipped plus all the other goodies that have been added.
