Automatic wipers / headlights

Featured Replies

Hi all - Just picked up my Octavia VRS Tdi saloon . I have a few questions / projects that I would like to do.

1. Install automatic headlights.

2. Install automatic wipers.

.

3. Install bonnet strut.

4. Improve boot struts so that boot opens with key.

5 Cigarette lighter socket in rear for kids.

If anyone has done these mods or has any information on how i could complete them, then I would appreciate the steer.

Many thanks

Craig

Are you certain that you want automatic wipers? I have them on my 2005 car and wish I didn't, since much of the time they don't wipe when I'd want them to. I would prefer an adjustable speed intermittent wipe, which the lower spec models had. BUT, if you're planning to fit standard Skoda parts then going for automatic wipers will give you an auto-dimming rear view mirror, which for night time driving is great.

It took me a while to get used to the rain sensing wipers, but I wouldn't want to be without them now.

Every once in a while they're a bit daft though. I wish there was a button somewhere to make them do a single wipe.

Auto lights and auto wipers are two things I wouldn’t pay a penny for.

This is probably obvious, but on mine adjusting the sensitivity switch down a notch and back has this effect. A simple button/lever manoevure to achieve this would clearly be better though!

Push the arm down and they will do a single wipe.

Unless it's changed on later models, doing that will swtich the auto-wipers off though. Or you'd nedd to go down two clicks to do a single wipe and then back up two clicks to put the auto wipers back on. What I do if I find I'm doing this is to then leave the wipers in the Off position, and pull the lever down to do a single wipe when needed. Exactly what any competent intermittent wipe would do for me...

You are correct… but then I leave mine in the off position (same as the auto lights) until they are needed, had both the wipers and lights come on when there was no reason to, nothing worse than wipers wiping a dry screen, hence why they are not turned on until they are needed.

I do the same, auto-wipers off unless it's raining. Unless I forget to turn them off when I park in the rain...

I discovered a nice feature on my 2011 Superb SE.

It has auto headlights so has the sensor on the windscreen, but the SE doesn't get auto wipers, they are a cost option from the factory.

A local member with VCDS was able to check a box and hey presto - auto wipers. Uncheck the box and the 'auto' position on the stalk reverts back to normal intermittent.

I didn't think I'd miss auto wipers when I bought the Superb (hence going for the SE), but I was wrong, they are a god send. May be I've been lucky but they've worked perfectly on the wifes Octavia Scout, my old vRS and now on the Superb too.

Judging by the OP (as he wants to fit auto lights) he doesn't have the sensor on the screen, so auto lights even if retrofitted won't work?

Another thing I didn't think I'd miss (but now I do) is the auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Ooh, really? I'm very tempted to look into this to switch my auto wipers off!

Yes which box in VCDS as I'll do this on my day's SE

I know you can push the stalk once, but I'd like some way to do it without having to put it back into auto mode afterwards.

Be interested to know about this as well.

If point 1 & 2 are not recommended then any ideas for 3,4 & 5 ?

Thanks

You will need to change the rear view mirror to get auto dimming as the sensors are completely separate from the rain/light sensor.

Also I believe you will need a new windscreen in order to retrofit the rain/light sensor.

I know you can push the stalk once, but I'd like some way to do it without having to put it back into auto mode afterwards.

Not really sure what this means.

But I'd also just like manually adjustable intermittent wipers. With the option to have an extra wipe when needed. Just like my old B5.5 Passat.

Rarely thought the auto wipers were any better. I've occasionally left them on auto and been surprised when they came on due to caterpillar cr*p or sap from overhead trees.

I know you can push the stalk once, but I'd like some way to do it without having to put it back into auto mode afterwards.

Perc its possible to do this well it works on my 2012 hatch at least by doing the following with the wiper stalk in the auto mode position just move the little sensitivity switch thats on top of the wiper stalk down or up by one clic then back to the original position it will make the wipers do just one sweep. It's just the little sensitivity switch on the top of the stalk you move not the whole wiper stalk which remains in the auto mode position.

Hope this helps

I have done that and posted here with video.

Rain sensor deactivated

Or briefly pull on the stalk as if to wash the screen but if you do it right, you'll only get a wipe.

Saloon?

1. & 2. you'll need to get the sensor attached which means new windscreen etc etc probably. Lots of money, I decided against the faff/cost despite wanting both (I'll know to find a car with both options ticked next time).

3. Superskoda / ebay etc

4. I think you can get stiffer springs or something so when you pop the boot, it opens. Can't remember what car the new springs come off though - a Saab springs (dum, dum, tish) to mind.

5. You want to install a cig lighter for your kids?

You will need to change the rear view mirror to get auto dimming as the sensors are completely separate from the rain/light sensor.

In my car the auto-dimming mirror and rain sensor look like a combined unit, so I assumed they were always sold that way? Such that to add the rain sensing function what you'd need to do is buy the combined auto-dimming mirror and rain sensor. Perhaps newer ones are different.
