Dear xabi,

Thanks so much for the video and info above. I'll be getting my RS Octavia in September (Delivery in Australia) and would like to know what the rear indicator (Orange) LED bulbs are called (Spec, model etc) and where you bought them from? (Possible online link?)

Would it be an easy pull out the current ones and put in the LED globe?

Would there be a reverse light LED as well (White)...

Thanks!

Hi Koolio,

Superskoda do boot lights, reversing light and number plate lights in LED, but no indicator lights:

http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/OCTAVIA-III/Lightning/

Better value IMO, LEDperf do full set of interior lights, number plate lights and reversing lights:

http://www.ledperf.co.uk/leds-for-skoda-octavia-3-5e-=c=-26_551.html

They also do PY21W LEDs for indicators but I think they do not guarantee that they will be error free - in fact they state that if you put more than two in, you need to add an extra resistor:

http://www.ledperf.co.uk/py21w-bulb-18-leds-oranges-high-power-base-bau15s-p-1005.html

There is also topLED.fr, which user "mailme" has used, but their site seems to be out of action at the minute:

http://topled.fr

I have been toying with getting the interior LEDs and the rear indicators from ledperf (note they are actually a french site, selling in euros), but not sure if they'll work properly. Might also struggle to justify replacing perfectly functional bulbs to SWMBO... not that she's likely to notice.

There's also these amber ones from Philips, but at AU$71 they're a bit pricey:

I bought some Osram Nightbreaker Unlimiteds from these guys the other day, a decent upgrade to the stock halogens (but I guess you're getting bi-xenons so not relevant to RS owners)

I've reported him before Andy but nothing happens..... :notme:

fair warning has already been given in this topic with guidance from my esteemed colleague as to what is expected of all users here, I don't want to know who started this squabble nor is there any value in digging up an old post to restart trouble, it's always the same bunch of names I see appearing in reports, nobody Is about to get banned just yet because it offends your precious sensibility, man up and grow a pair, be the bigger man and ignore trouble makers.

word out.

Hi LED fanatics :)

I think I've found an easier way to change the front indicator bulbs (without bumper and headlights off).

After removing the wheel and 16 pcs. of screw and some "fighting" with the pIastic cover I gained access to the back side of the headlight.

My big hand goes in easily.

It was a 15 min. job for me but I think next time I will be faster :)

I stopped at this point and put everything back as I don't have the LED bulbs and the repair kit. But I will order them soon :)

Any thoughts on this method...?

I've checked only the left side but I think it's the same on the right...

OK, I'm finished with installing LED bulbs for front indicators.

I can say it is relatively easy!

You don't have to remove the bumber, headlight, etc. you can work in the engine bay.

I have relative big hands and I succeeded.

The first one was half an hour and the second one took only 10 minutes.

Step 1:

You have to cut out the covers.

For this purpose I made a modified screwdriver. I bended it a little bit and cut it shorter.

Use a cheap one. It may brake when you bend it - mine didn't.

The total length is 10 cm. You can work with it easily there is enough space.

Using a griding machine make it 1-2 mm thick on the end and sharpen the last 5 mm on one side. Make sure it's really sharp.

With this tool start cutting out the cover following the outline. The material is really thin there - the cover is designed to break out.

Make sure it's not too cold before you start. I made it in my garage after coming home - the plastic was warm thanks to the engine.

So cut out the cover following the outline from 8 o'clock to 4 o'clock. Don't push your cutting tool too deep - there are wires behind the cover.

When you are finished with cutting (1/3 of the total) push the cover inwards until it breaks out. It won't break out completely - at least mine didn't.

Using your cutting tool you can turn out the cover. Push it behind the cover and turn it out. Then you can grab it and breake it out completely.

Drink a beer :)

Step 2:

Following the wires you will find the plastic connector with your fingers. Turn it clockwise until it looses.

Use a small mirror and a torch if you can't find it - you won't see anything without them.

Take a look at the position of the connector before pull it out.

Pull out the bulb, and install the new one. The wires are relatively long.

I noticed 2 issues here: 1) the LED bulbs are heavier and longer 2) the chinese base on the LED bulb is some kind of universal connector for PW24W and PWY24W and the connection is not perfect.

Because of theese issues there is a risk of the bulb will fall into the lamp after some time because of vibration or shooting the engine hood, etc.

I will secure the connections somehow in the near future.

Check if the new bulb is working.

(If you get a bulb out warning on your dash you will need coding with VAG-COM software).

Step 3:

Plug the new bulb with the connector in the lamp.

You will have to turn it counterclockwise to fix it until you hear a click.

Because of the weird position I couldn't apply enogh force with my fingers.

Finally I used a small 8 mm wrench for this. It fits onto the plastic connector (again use your small mirror).

Step 4:

Install the new covers (repair kits) from Skoda. You will need a small torx head screwdriver.

Or you can install some cheap rubber elements just like me :)

I bought 2 pcs. of 38.5 mm water plug and 2 pcs. of soft rubber stuff (designed to connect 30/40 mm drain pipes).

I put the water plugs inside the soft rubber thingy so the diameter of them was increased.

There are multiple sealing lips (inside/outside) so I'm not worried.

I tested my car in heavy rain and there's no problem.

And they also look very well I bet the dealer won't recognise them.

For DIY guys: the diameter of the hole is 41.00 mm.

Step 5:

Enjoy :)

My bulbs came with genuine CREE XP-E LEDS.

The color is slightly different: deeper, a little bit closer to orange. Like on a new Audi (LED rear turn signal). I like the color.

My buls have the same brightness than the originals.

Has anyone tried replacing their REAR indicator bulbs with LED? I was thinking of trying to get them to match the brake/tail lights, at least in terms of the instant on-off look that LEDs have.

Primarily I am worried that a non-proven LED will trigger the system to think there's a blown bulb. I have heard that CANBUS-compatible bulbs are the ones to go for, something like this:

http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/581-Ultimate-Canbus-92-LED-Bulb.html

Yep... Piece of cake. 581 for the rear indicator and 382 for the reverse. Owners manual is almost accurate for the task, got my LEDs from autobulbdirect and they were great. Now ordered 2 LED H8 for the fogs. Still puzzled about the silly front PYW24w front indicators... Bloody design flaw there...

Finally I have found a good one for the front idicators:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Amber-Yellow-Error-Free-PWY24W-PW24W-LED-Bulbs-For-Audi-A3-A4-A5-Q3-VW-MK7/32283343574.html

(Previously I had a "50W CREE" bulb with fake chips, low brightness and terrible reflection in lamp.)

This one also has some reflection issues but is bright enough to compensate this.

Color is closer to yellow than amber.

When installed, brightness is equal or a little bit more compared to the original bulbs.

I don't know if they are "canbus friendly" or not, I recoded them to leds with VCDS.

Check my video with xenons for reference :)

Quick question regarding the repair kits. is 5L0 998 295 just for the fronts? Do you need repair kits for the rear turn signals as well? is the part number different?

Thanks

Anybody replaced indicator bulbs in side mirrors?

I find those are quite weak actually, looking both from the front and side, considering they affect safety very much.

The mirror indicators are already LED and are sealed units. The LED's are hardwired in and not designed to be replaced.

I think the design is such that if they fail or are damaged the whole unit is renewed as one part.

No doubt someone will be able to open up the unit and re-solder some brighter LED's in though!
