Saw 70 mpg over 60 miles at ave of 40mph, incl urb and 2 stops

Featured Replies

OK

Only me an the big dog, pootled up to Randelstown, kicked Octy III tyres a while, down thro R'stown, P'glenone, Kilrea and back to Cowtown, ave 70+mpg at 40mph over about 60 miles.

Stopped in Cowtown, then down to, and through  Portrush for lunch, after lunch round to Portstewart for a big icecream, up and down the Prom before I got parked.

Then back home., back through P'stewart and P'rush.

Still over 70mpg, but ave speed had dropped to 35 with the urban driving.

70 less 3 % is near enough 68, so quite pleased.

All on bog standard diesel without any additives.

New, well 3 month old, Dunlop tyres all round though.

PS

Air Con on, or windows fully down to let the dog stick his turbulance inducing head out.

And bytimes A/C on with the windows open :wall:

Are you feeling ok?

  • Author

Yes,

It was a lovely day for a "just in case" DPF cleaning drive.

Cept the Sciatica is playing up.

Did you perchance surmise I were on drugs or sommat. :giggle:

(Bloody wife wont let me near her heroin patchs or Tramodol hoard.)

PS

Not quite cheating but the route I described is essentially up and down the Bann River valley, so essentially flat.

3% was recorded error between brimming figs and the trip computer.

Any other questions?

Ciao.

Do you collect stamps??

  • Author

No,

But I operate a chainsaw while wearing flipflops and shorts, occassionally while fuelled by Guiness.

If climbing a tree with the chainsaw I will however don my Lowa boots.

And leave the Guiness on the ground.

I also very much enjoyed playing with explosives when younger. Proper explosives.

And launching Guy Fawkes rockets from my bare hands.

And hitting live rounds with a hammer, held in a vice, percussion cap up.(was VERY LOUD)

And climbing in through a starburst plate glass window, about a 4 foot square which some had pitched a bottle through.

That one still makes me shudder, at the time I remember thinking?

" if I slip those projecting shards will disembowell me"

but quite calmly.(Alcohol being involved)

So no, I dont collect stamps.

PS

The bloody flipflops are a curse as the sawdust is really annoying between the bare toes.

Actually, much to my surprise I was recently described as a "risk taker", which is not how I precieve myself, but others obviously do

cheers

PPS

Might have been the DSG Skoda made him see me as a "risk taker"

you could buy a moped.... that will do the same speed and give you even more mpg!

please don't take (too much) offence as I found your post quite funny.

did you have loads of traffic backing up behind you btw?

  • Author

None!

I was "going with the flow" on "A" and "B" roads, sitting about 45/50/55, if someone came up behind I either let them past or got a sufficient move on.

Obviously on the dual it was no odds.

btw

I get the distinct impression that a lot of posters seem to be very unaware of the significent difference between door-todoor journey average speed figs, and ones driving speed.

Unless mostly motorway runs, one will rarely see much higher than mid 30's ave speed figs.

Even what I thought was a fast clean run down to Portlaois at an indicated 80  and up to 90 bytimes for 200 odd miles.

All motorway, with if I recall only one set of traffic works.

I still only averaged 60 or 62 mph.

PS

Where would I put the Lab/Rotty cross on a scooter?

PPS

not in the least offended.

At 54 I take pleasure in driving smooth, sometimes at moderate speeds, but encompassing motorway stuff when occassioned, "going with the flow" on "A" and "B" roads, and never myself needlessly holding up traffic.

Generally arriving at the next traffic lights/road junction/road end immediately behind the dork who insisted in overtaking way back when there was no point due to clearly visible (but only apparently to me?) congestion ahead.

I had a courtesy 1.6tdi manual elegance think it was something like an 11 plate with 18k miles on the other year. I managed 70mpg (on the 40mph 8mile into work...) low revs' no rushing, no stopping either though was lucky at all the lights...

It is possible...

I have had 68mpg in my 1.9tdi too same run...

Anyone who wears Lowas and owns an Octavia is OK in my book! ;) I have to say though that I don't run around in my vRS looking for out and out economy... My Lowas seem to be fitted with lead soles!

Dieseldog do you wear any shoes?

  • Author

Hi Sur!

As stated either

(i) Flipflops

or

(ii) Lowa high leg combat (GTX?) boots.

Both being worn summer or winter circumstances depending.

By that I mean I will and do wear the flipflops out of a November, December evening.

The boots last about 6 months, the soles are then effectively done and the uppers so stretched as to be unsupportive.

It is quite an expensive habit, but after a lifetime of badly turned ankles.

Absolutly worth it.

Currently seriously considering re-treading both flipflops and boots with car tyre tread.

Affixed with Stixall

Worth a try.

PS

A wardrobe with a 30 year old pair of Cheanys  , Churchs etc all sitting lonely and unloved.

I used to wear shoes, as in "veltshonen"/leather soled  types.

I meant to say while driving as a mate drives bare feet and says it helps him achieve good mpg

I habitually drove in flipflops on holidays.

But that 70+ mpg run, was done wearing the third best pair of Lowas.

Newest and 2nd newest pairs resting after Kiwi applic

But no odds cos a pair straight from the box would have done the same.

forgot about the dog LOL. Joking aside one thing that struck me was that often others start threads complaing theres something wrong with their Skoda because they're getting 'poor' mpg so it makes a change to hear from someone who's able to demonstrate that when driven economically remarkable figures can be obtained. nice one!

Have had 70 mpg from my vRS for my 13 mile commute to work and regularly around 60. Not always so good on way home though! I for one certainly can't complain about low mpg.

Sarge.

So!

Like you live on top of a mountain and work down in the Valley?

merely postulating.

PS

Driving a 1725 cc Hillman Hunter back about 1980, habitually got about 25 to 30 mpg.

Started overnighting in Belfast, travelling up Sat pm and returning home, Sunday sometime, about 50 miles each way.

I could reasonably get a brimmed 40mpg, at sensible speeds, with smooth anticipatory driving.

SEE, I were bloody odd way back then too.

Got 62.6mpg (indicated) in the Fabia estate (1.6 CR 105) over 232 miles averaging 60mph, including a slow hold up through town :)

But Dammn

I omitted to photograph after my 100 miles/70.?mpg/but only 35mph

I once managed 48mpg in my vRS, but it was only the once. My overall average is in my signature below and so far it seems to be vying for lowest overall economy for a CR engined Octy on the forum!  :giggle:

But who buys a vRS to pussyfoot around just to get big economy figures  :)

Exactly - and that is why I'm not sat here worrying about it or pulling my hair out (that and I have precious little hair left anyway!)

Well I got 31mpg on the way into work this morning, whilst never exceeding 40mph

Towing an empty IW Trailer

hey ho

dieseldog you should try stand-up!

Marcos I saw an FL greenline on my travels the other day possibly when I was coming down the coast road, instantly thought could it be you?

By Jingo!! as Doddy used to say.

I found the 100 mile photos

see att

less approx. ( and actually less than) 3% for computer error.

So in reality not quite 70mpg, nearer 68, sniff!

must try harder.
