Is it possible to fix the hub thread

Featured Replies

Ive got a mk 1 1.4 16v and i replaced the hub assembly however in the process of putting the calliper back on i have stripped the thread using one of the pins - is it possible to do something to get the pin to fit again as i fear this is causing un even braking and steering issues??

One of my carrier bolts are helicoiled, has been for over a year.

A helicoil is stronger than the original thread so I dare say it'll be fine longer than the car itself will be!

Got one of mine done last year . I did get a new bolt as well . Machine shop said old bolt was iffy . Machine shop also said that this design of carrier is fitted on a few cars and it seems to be one of the types they see more often .

When I read the topic title I assumed it was a request for piccies to be found and restored to a "how to 'do' hubs" technical. Ah well, wrong - LOL.

I'm assume this thread holds the pins/sliders in place? In which case I'd make every effort to not drive it until it was fixed.

Hi J, the two pins that hold the calliper to the wheel hub (7mm allen key ones if i remember right).

As for not driving it - I have to work so its getting dragged there rain or snow haha

Then order the helicoil kit and get it done ASAP, once you have the kit in hand and a cordless drill with the right sized drill bit it's a very quick and simple job to do, you'll be able to get it done in an hour at the weekend.

Don't risk driving it like this for any longer than you absolutely have to!

which kit do I need? are they size dependant?

If you don't know/can't find out, get it done at your local garage. The sort of failure that may result from your knackered thread could result in someone being badly injured. Also, this thread could be used to indicate you knew there was a fault with the car. Landing you in the **** with your insurance and PC Copper.

Get it sorted out FFS!

Yes they're size dependant, I don't know which kit you need because I haven't needed to measure the thread, I guess it'll be something like M8 x 1.25 from memory of briefly seeing the thread during my last pad change but you'll need to get it checked before ordering.

Done mine. Easy to do but make sure your droll is bigenough for the bit plus once done trim the coil a tad

I'am glad i swapped my tdi hubs for vrs ones, where the brake carrier bolts onto the hub (Y) makes it good for a future upgrade

The kit posted is for the vrs.

Take it yours is hub and carrier all in one?

i don't need the kit Billy, that was part of the reason i bought the vrs hubs and got vr6 brakes so i could avoid this problem with the built in thread on the hub for the slider pins, but also i knew i wanted better brakes at some point, and this would be the foundation for that upgrade in due course, but i did suffer from the slider pin thread wearing away

This is the OP's thread, he doesn't have a VRs, that kit won't help him, please read more carefully before giving advice or hijacking.

There is a very important safety issue here and we don't want to lose a member in tragic circumstances because he couldn't make sense of the advice he's being given.

Aaron, read my post above, whip the pin out and measure it or find a bolt that matches the thread perfectly and get that thread identified and order the kit to suit, please get it done quickly, I don't want to think about the scale of the accident you'll have if that pin works loose.

As per my post on helicoiling the stubaxle assembly. If the thread has been damaged, it's highly likely that the pin has also been damaged. i got a new one from VAG TPS @ about £14 . I found a machine shop and had it done by pros at a reasonable price ,as I'd taken the precaution of taking along a new pin, a 7mm socket atachment and data on the torque for the bolt. In the meantime ,whilst waiting to get job done- keep the other pin tight, and make sure the retaining cap is tight ,as with it in place ,the pin may be slack, but it's retained ( albeit loose) in the hole, and under breaking, will lock against the damaged hole. BUT- get it done Pronto.

I must admit, I'm tempted to upgrade to Vrs FRONT SETUP ,as the 1.4  brakes are prone to fade . I find it strange that most makers fit disks on both axles on a TDI as standard .
