Choosing a hybrid turbo...?

Featured Replies

Evening all, sorry to post up on this forum considering I'm referring to my Ibiza Cupra TDi (did own a Fabia SDi beforehand though! :) ) Sadly not getting much response from SEAT Cupra.net

Since we have similar engines I was hoping someone might advise on what hybrid turbo to choose.

Ideally I'm looking for around 260 bhp/350-370 lbs ft. I was hoping that I might have my PD 160 turbo re worked to produce the above figures if possible? Not too keen on buying a brand new off the shelf turbo or swapping from the VNT turbo across to one which requires an aftermarket manifold, costly!

Any ideas? Thanks :)

For 260bhp you need to be looking at GTB2260vk turbo really.  Full conversion is probably £3-£4k including manifold, exhaust. turbo and mapping.   Would be a very comfortable 260bhp though.  The most you can expect from a hybrid VNT17 (pd150) turbo is about 240bhp when pushed/stressed hard.

Aren't the standard injectors pretty much at their limit with 240ish bhp?

I was looking at around £1000 for a set of injectors and another £1000 for a helix clutch.

With GTB2260vk you can push for a little bit more as the turbo can push more boost than any VNT17 hybrid.

Makes sense - kind of wish I'd gone for the 2260 over my hybrid 150. But then again it's knowing where to stop!

Maybe next year!

Darkside seem to think a max of 310 from the 2260? Not to keen on the expenditure though!

Yup in the real world a hybrid 150 turbo wont push past 210/220 bhp any more and the rr is over-reading!

All depends on your balance

As you have a cupra 160 you already have a fmic

For relaitvely little you can just get a hybrid 150/160 turbo (you will need a performance clutch + remap)

And thats you

For any more bhp your talking about doubling the cost of a hybrid 150/160

yeah, with plenty of other supporting mods.  I am just saying it will do a comfortable 260, compared to a stressed out smaller hybrid turbo.

Ah right, I'm with you, sorry.

So when company's talk about supporting mods, what are they referring too? FMIC, clutch, exhaust etc. any more ?

Cams, head work, injectors, inlet manifold, map sensor, TIP all things I assume might need looking at?

With these bigger turbos, wouldn't there be a big increase in lag? Can't say I'd fancy losing the driveability for some more ponies personally....  Or are these some fancy turbos to help avoid the lag?

I noticed a bit of lag on my pd150 hybrid last night. Always happens when your trying to show off doesn't it :P

Didn't fancy launching it at high revs - trying to preserve the clutch for now!

When you have a good clutch, you don't worry about this :D

You get lag, just like when you fit a big turbo to a petrol car, but you just need to drive around.  a 2260 will never tail off until the redline either. ;)

I've a bit more lag since my hybrid 150 was fitted Dan. I like the way it kicks in, but it does catch me out occasionally when I'm at low revs in 2nd and I attempt to put my foot down! Hence why I don't think I could live with more lag as a daily...

A 2260 would be awesome when driven flat out I'm sure though :-) !

I've only really noticed it in first gear when pulling away or something. I suppose I should get a decent clutch and make full use of my launch control :P

Need to meet up and see this beast of yours soon Dan! Think we've got the same/very similar turbo setup now. Need to get my clutch and FMIC sorted!! So many things to do to it though....  I currently have no grille on it - being sprayed at long last!

Is that launch control really worth it do you reckon?

In short going from stock to +/- 260hp is likely to cost you about the value of your car!

We should mate, before the winter draws in! Sounds as though it is very similar. I've got a FMIC but no updated clutch currently, I'm just careful with the way I drive it!

Not used the launch control to launch tbh, it's set at 2,800rpm and is more of a gimmick than anything for me :)

Don't fancy the idea of spending out a hell of a lot on chasing bhp. Best spent on suspension and an LSD I reckon. Thanks for the info though.:)
