what's the Octavia cr vrs like in the snow?

Featured Replies

You can get a decent tyre (Vredstein, Nokian) for around £100 delivered from Oponeo and then what £10-15 to fit per corner.

Camskill had Uniroyal winters for £60 each recently.

Quick internet search on winter tyres for a 17" wheel - £140 fitted and a Goodyear winter is almost £170! So winter tyres are 40+% dearer than the equivalent summer Goodyear Eagle2 - has it got 40% more rubber (can't have, all those cut outs in tread). Seriously, where are these 'cheap' or even equivalent tyre fitters than will do a winter tyre (a brand that you've actually heard of) and not take the p*ss with the price?

I maybe didn't make my point about the speed rating on winter tyres too well - why manufacture H or V rated tyres but not a W? Surely the speed rating is irrelevant as a V tyre is up to 149mph? In the snow, slush, ice conditions? Even getting near the top H rated tyre rating would be a totally unrealtistic speed in that kind of weather so why isn't there W speed rated tyres - it'll then be the same size as standard and my insurer won't up my premium for a "modification" to the car?

Winter tyres will always be dearer than the equivalent summer tyre as there is less demand for winter tyre within the uk and is still quite a niche market.. I'm sure if it became mandatory to fit winters then the price would drop as the volume/demand produced would be far greater. I've just ordered a set of 18" Avon for £90 each to replace the Hankook winter tyres I have used previously which I think is a good price. The winter tyres transformed the car and worth it in my opinion for the extra safety for my family as well.

Trundlenut - want to negotiate with my insurers?! I asked about window tinting - you'd have thought from their reaction I'd volunteered my car for 'Pimp My Ride'. :)

As for the 'deals' - simply not available where I live. I've checked all the websites, made phonecalls, no-one getting anywhere close to £120 per wheel nevermind including the fitting charge. It's quite simply taking the p!ss out of the consumer. Considering the potential market out there I'm surprised that manufacturers haven't put more effort into All-Season tyres, a perfectly acceptable compromise for most UK drivers.

Winter tires should cure the spin, unless there is ice under the snow. Start in second gear slowly, if too much spin.

Also 18" snow tires, is just plain crazy/expensive :)

try my tyres, 4 16 inch steelies fitted with avon winter tyres came to just over 400 including delivery last week when i checked. A little less if you use quidco.

Yep, you will get 16" steels with winters for less than just 17" tyres. Plus you don't have the risk of your alloys/tyres being damaged twice a year at changeover.

Get a different insurance company. Mine are quite happy with me running winter tyres on 16" Audi alloys.

Well, just bought 4 nokian wra3's in 225/40/18v for £115 each from oponeo. Think that is a pretty good price and after last years nightmare on goodyear f1 asym2 in the snow ie couldn't get moving even on the slightest of slopes let's hope they are worth it !! First time using winters so will review them when some white stuff falls.

I got a nice set of 16" Audi 10 spoke alloy wheels off EBay a few weeks ago with local pick up for £51 ! And they are in great condition, bloke had them in his garage for a while and wanted anything or he had been offered £40 in scrap value if he wanted to sell them to the scrappy !

Just bought 4x Kumho winter tyres 205/55/16 V rated and XL for £59 each !

That's my winter bargain sorted for the potholed winter roads and keeping my 18" wheels perfect !

I've done it backwards, I have 15" summer wheels and 16" winters...

I couldn't bring myself to put steel wheels or smaller alloys on my vrs. Wheels are still immaculate after two winters as I wash them every few days and always clean in the back of them as well. Yes I know smaller wheels are better in snow etc but I'll stick to 18" thanks. Don't think £90 each for avon winter tyres is that bad and at least my vrs won't look like a taxi for half the year lol .

With winters on, no problem at all
