PL53 HTK. Sdi to VRS

Featured Replies

Just moved from a sdi to a vrs and after the power the biggest thing scaring me is the complexity. Ive got from a N/A car that didn't even have abs to a turbo'd car with many other expensive to fix items!

Just after some tips on how to prolong life of the Turbo and DMF mainly.

Also has anyone on here had/know of the car before me? It was originally on N11 VRS and now PL53 HTK.

Hope I've put this in the right place wasn't sure over here and introduce yourself.

For a long time I had both cars, the sdi was Mrs grrs and mine was the vrs.

The best advice is to not floor it from lowish speeds in the higher gears.

Always better to get your revs up by changing down first.

Make sure you are doing a good 2500rpm in any gear before going full throttle.

Unlike the sdi it's not a car that takes kindly to being given the welly

from low revs.

As for the turbo, it's a lottery. They can go for many miles, or they can go pop

after just a few thousand. Fingers crossed you have a good one. Just keep on top

of your oil changes and you'll have as good a chance as anyone else.

Abs is a pretty reliable system, if you have ESP then it's a good idea to keep the rear

discs and pads in good condition and corrosion free so the system can function correctly.

I'd recommend pagid rear (and front) discs as they take a long time to start rusting which can be an

issue with the rear brakes on these.

Opps, i have been in lower gears so far to feel the turbo come in, but will be stopping from now! Fortunately only been a few days of that.

Ive seen that mentioned on the turbos before and yeah apart from keeping on top of fresh oil guess theres not much to do.

No ESP only ASR.

Cheers for the reply might save my DMF from me haha.

Pleasure, I'm on holiday and the wife is sound asleep next to me (after one gin sour too many ;) from the

all inclusive free bar) and its 1am here so there's not much that I can do to occupy myself that won't

wake her up so I'm browsing briskoda as usual...

Standard on any turbo car but let it get up to temperature before you start to give it full boost, I don't really let my turbo go over half bar before its upto temp and then let it idle for 30 secs before you turn it off. Some people will say you don't need to let idle but I always have on my turbo'd cars and it won't do it any harm

Cool, i have been doing that one so far and intend on sticking too it!! and il try stick to letting it cool down too.

Got to say been coming up with excuses to drive it so far any reason to go anywhere :)

Its my second car and after three year of sdi its like the lights have been switched on!!

I think it must be testament to what you say, Kyle, I pretty much always have driven (slow) from half a mile before I get to fast carriageways and the same at the destination ends.

With that it does slow you up so that helps the oil cool before switching off - and for a good while I've been practising idling to cool the oil before switch off.

A bit slow also until the oil is getting warm (more for the engine than the turbo TBH) then its okay to floor it (then I don't spare the horses and at least as fast on the mways I'm sure as anyone on here but tend to be more smooth and constant personally rather than constantly on/off)

So that must count for something - 107k from new in and still going. Although the police siren suggests I must do something soon lol

Hi

Loving the VRS. Sorry to go off topic, but I just got a 2002 SDI estate as I need some ShoeStringBudget motoring. Can either of you give me any hints or tips on keeping the SDI running happily and what to watch out for ?

Its a Comfort Model with 125K on the clock. Seems ok, but AC not working and switch for drivers side electric window needs a "magic touch" to make it work properly.

Cheers

Andy :-)
