  • From the perspective of a 'hobby' detailer, I spent many years staying away from machine polishers but then bought a Fiesta with particularly bad factory paint (new!) that had had the Autoglym treatme

  • Or alternatively, the 'Dodgy method'   1. Fill bucket with warm water and some turtle wash 2. Hose car with water from hose 3. Wipe car with sponge 4. Rinse with hose 5. Walk away   :p

  • As much as I do take the gentle **** out of analist detailers, I do have a guilty secret of rather enjoying photo threads of someone 'rescuing' a thoroughly unloved car into something shiny and bright

Don bother it will just wash off!

What will?

From the perspective of a 'hobby' detailer, I spent many years staying away from machine polishers but then bought a Fiesta with particularly bad factory paint (new!) that had had the Autoglym treatment badly applied so asked around and did a bit of research. All of the top detailers I looked at used the machines for paint correction and applying protection.

This was my first attempt and Ive never looked back since! The quality of finish (obviously used with the correct products) just cant be beat.

Apologies to the proper detailers on this thread by my hobbyist efforts but I thought it best demonstrated by some photos I took at the time...

@Yeti_Man - that's not just polishing, that looks like full on wet sanding. Fair play to you, you're a braver man than I!

Yes correct, I guess my (badly made) point was that my Autoglym treatment was so poorly applied, I took it right back and started from scratch myself. For what I spent on the polishing and protection side of things I could have saved at least 60% on what most dealers want to charge for Autoglym and similar and the results (with the use of a polisher) are superior without doubt. :)

Excellent work there buddy. Braver than a lot out there to hit the car with wet sanding. You've just got to be sensible and patient with wet sanding. I did my current octavia as the orange peel was awful.

I take my hat off to you :).

Thanks, appreciate the positive comment. :) The orange peel was awful on this car also, seems to be a problem with a lot of mainstream production cars nowadays. Ive now done seven cars as above and they've turned out amazingly well, I do however go very easy and gentle with the whole wet sanding process. :)

Fantastic work there!!

I have done a very small amount of wet sanding but not on that scale

I guess you measured the paint thickness before you started..

IME....Orange peel does give a thicker coat .....but not always

Thanks. :)   Of course I measured it first! :bandit:  As I say, Im an amateur with no access to the expensive kit unfortunately.

I'm sure you did....I'm an amateur too..

Its nice to see good work like this being posted so others can learn and comment if they wish

You guys on Detailing World?

You guys on Detailing World?

I usually avoid the place. Why do you ask?

Amateur here too (hobby come official sideline), but I did purchase a paint depth gauge when I realised I would be doing a bit of wet sanding - has come in very useful in telling me "STOP!" :D.  Had some good results on a fiesta a chap was trading in.

As for Autolgym itself - whilst many people tend to look down on the brand, I like a lot of their products

Just out of interest seeing if there is any fellow members, good place to learn and see reviews of products (not rebranded stuff)

Its a good place to read about products and reviews but don't ask a question!!

Really, how come?, it surely cant be worse than this forum surely haha

Believe me....even worse than here!!

Autoglym products themselves are mostly very good - it's the rip-off Lifeshine treatment that isn't.

Hi, I have a friend who is a professional detailed , and he has offered to do a full life shine treatment for me for £100.

Thoughts?

He is genuinely very good. Tends to only do classics, and v expensive motors.

Seems a good deal to me.

There are far better sealants than AG Lifeshine..I think its poor...had it on my wifes Fabia as it was already applied when we bought it.

The better ones are ceramic and will last upwards of  2 to 3 years without any problem

Ask him if he will apply some GTechnik C1 for you or Ceramishield instead
