Sound Like Wheel Bearing?

Featured Replies

Got a whiny type rumble from what seems to be the front off side.

All 4 tyres have done about 2000 miles and show no sign of sawtoothing.

It changes depending on road surface and seems to be worst at about 60mph on smooth roads, where it sounds like an aeroplane is attached to the front of the car.

If I take it out of gear and let the engine idle the sound is still the same.

The car has done 86,000. It's a 06 2.0TFSi vRS hatchback.

Are the wheel bearings at all common on these?

Cheers.

Checked for any play in the wheel?

If you suspect a bearing probably best to get it to a mechanic sharpish.

I don't think bearing failure is a particular problem on the Octy.

Rears tend to get replaced due to rusting of an integrated sensor ring rather than the bearing itself.

My 59 plate front passenger side went after 3 years @ 50k.

I was sure it was a bearing but one garage thought it was the diff and main dealer couldn't hear it...!!.

I got an Indy to change it and it was perfect. If you gut feeling is a bearing it probably is. You will lost likely not feel any play, these are modern sealed bearings.

You need to buy the hub assembly as a complete unit.

I was led to believe bearings going in vag cars was common. My mk1 vrs got through a couple of bearings in 3 years ownership.

Exactly right.

Had it changed yesterday. Full sealed hub unit and now the car's pretty much perfect again.

Now it's changed I realise there was a grinding feeling coming through the pedals and floor on the driver's side.

My car was only 8 months old with 3.5k miles on the clock and the rear drivers side bearing needed replaced under warranty, so anything is possible even though it should not go at such low mileage.

How much was it to get your bearing done?

I think my n/s/f is going, done 12k on it since i got it and its getting louder. I can only hear it when turning left and it comes in and out every couple of seconds like a resonating vibration / noise if that makes sense.

Not a particularly common issue I don't think, not heard much about them failing.

I've just had one done, front offside, just short of 100k at the time. I was getting a 'clicking' when turning right, only noticeable when past half lock really, so doing a turn in the road, that sort of thing.

Think the part was £90-100.

I think it was about £160.00 fitted by an indy.

Same. £100 for the part then 1 hour labour + VAT.
