Steel winter rims and snowchains

Featured Replies

Evening all ! I`ve got to buy some steel rims for my superb ( 7j 112 et45 centre 57.1) but there seems to be a lack of places to buy. I`ve seen Oponeo, Tyremen and Mytyres, but are there any others ?  Will 9mm snowchains fit  and clear the suspension on 205 55 16`s ? Many thanks

16" rims are a Skoda spare and Skodaparts.com do packages for steel rims and winter tyres (£600 for four wheels and tyres). I'm sure they could do the rims on their own. I've bought a few items from them and they're always helpful and respond quickly to enquiries. Of course your local dealer might help.

I believe chains will fit in the space between 205 width tyres. I use Spikes Spiders which  fit on the outside of the wheel and can therefore be used with standard wheels and tyres (225/45x17 in my case). They're supplied by the Roof Box Company.

Ive just bought a set from Mytyres. £427 including delivery for steelies and Avon ice touring st. Cheapest / best deal I could find. Bought through Quidco and got 3% cash back too.

Afraid I have no experience of snow chains so cannot help you with that question.

Thanks for those replies; great community. Richie, Mytyres only offers a steel with an offset of 50, and I want to keep as close to OE as possible. Oponeo seems cheapest at the moment, at £45 a rim, free delivery. I have gone for Nokian WRA3`s. Having used Nokians for 4 years on two Subarus, I have found them to be the highest rated winter tyres for the price, and very hard wearing. I have just sold a 3 year old set for £100, so they cost me £232 over that period.

Hi,

I have just done the same but Mytyres were showing and supplied steel wheels with an offset of 45 (ET45). I decided to go with Dunlop 4D's.

The manual suggests than fine link (9mm) chains are OK for 7J x 16 wheels with a 45 or 50 offset.

I use a set of Thule K Summit chains that dont go behind the wheel when used with my standard 225/40/R18 alloys. Not cheap but they are the easiest chains to fit I have ever used. Up and running very quickly without the hassle of reaching around the back of the tyre etc.. They also give clearance to the wheel arch on full lock allowing for suspension travel which was a concern for me. Lucky for me these will fit the new steel wheels as well if required.

The only thing left to check is that it's OK to used the original wheel bolts with the steel wheels, 99.9% sure it is OK.

Regards,

Kevin.

Well, my factory supplied 16" steel spare works with the standard (alloy, 18") wheel bolts so I don't think you have a problem.

Good, good. Does the hub have to have a centre cap?

If you fit chains just be careful that they don't foul the bottom of the spring base or the side of the strut as there is very little clearance which is I think why the manual says to use low profile chains.

I've just taken delivery of my order from Mytyres.com and they have an offsett of 45.

Sorry.. correction; Mytyres could not supply the tyre that I wanted with a 94 load rating...that`s what I meant. I`ve had tyre/wheel shopping overload!!

Hedgecutter and others...had my new Continental winter tyres fitted to new (dealer supplied) steel rims last weekend, balanced, and then the alloys removed and these fitted for the winter. £40 all in, tenner a wheel which is great value from Tyreland, Christchurch. Very clean to wait and tok 45 minutes from turnung up. Believe there are Tyrelands (and Protyres which they are supplied by) in other places. ATS which is nearer had declined to help as I didn't buy the tyres from them.

Christchurch Tyre Co are also excellent, and fit all my winters; as an old customer I get it a bit cheaper than £40.They are on off Somerford Rd by Screwfix.  You also get offered a coffee or tea as well! Got the steels from Oponeo £46 each delivered, and Nokian WRA3`s 94V reinforced, £78 each, Pneu`s online.
