Bi-Xenon Headlight

Featured Replies

Hi There, My Brother Has Just Bought An Octavia VRS On A 61 Reg With Bi-Xenon Headlight. As The DRLs Are Used As Sidelights, What Are The Bulbs At The Top Of The Headlight For, As It Has Baffled Me A Bit.

Many Thanks,

Rik

on a facelift vRS there are little blue-ish bulbs at the top of the headlight that are there just to block the hole up - they are not wired in.

as you said, the led drl's work in a dimmed mode as sidelights so nothing else is needed.

btw - its not bi-xenon, your high beam is halogen IIRC, only the main beam is xenon.

Yep, no bi-xenon setup on the Mk2, facelift or pre-facelift.

Thank You For The Reply. Sorry, Just Thought They Were Bi-Xenon, As They Adjust Automatically, And They Have Headlight Washer Jets Too. It Also Has A Feature Where The Projector Turns With The Steering, As You Drive.

Yep all true, just none of those features require a bi-xenon setup :)

Aye - exactly what standard Xenon lights do.

Bi-Xenon is where both headlights and full-beam are Xenon (full beam achieved via a shutter). With the Octy Xenon's the high-beam is still a Halogen bulb.

Now I Understand. Sorry, My Bad. Yeah, The Main Beam Is A Halogen Bulb.

This isn't a dig, but why does each word in your posts start with a Capital letter? Makes it strangely difficult to read.

Sorry, Its Just How I Type. Ive Always Done It. Think I Have OCD

Certain special octavias have bi-xenon headlights :-) :-D :-)

If you think that's bad you should try reading anything by William Shatner. He. Insists. In. Putting. Full. Stops. Between. Every. Word. Just. Like. How. He. Speaks.

Hello there, I have an Octy VRS pre-fl 2006, what do i need to get bi-xenon set up. I have seem a few standard octy's with them, I also have VCDS

cheers maj

Mine has all this too. I too wondered about the blue bulbs - thanks for clearing it up!

No standard MK2 Octavia (pre-FL or FL) has bi-xenons. Some cars do have xenons but as the high beam is still a halogen bulb they are not bi-xenons.

A few options if you want xenon lights:

- You can choose the legal (and expensive) route of buying OEM xenon headlamps and fitting level-sensors, controller and the headlamp washer system.

- There is the illegal but favoured option of a non-canbus friendly HID kit from londoncolour (on ebay) and having the car coded to remove bulb warning errors.

- You can also go full aftermarket and replace the projector units inside the headlamps with quality bi-xenon units, this is still illegal but you will get a better beam pattern and cutoff than the HID kit from londoncolour. It's also possible to get aftermarket level kits but they are hard to find.

Most people seem to get past MOT's with the technically illegal kits fitted but depending on future MOT rules and how friendly your local MOT station is you may have issues. If you do fit anything that doesn't self-level, please adjust it as necessary as they will be very bright to oncoming traffic.

Your call to which, if any, you choose.

if i code out the warning lamp does it mean that all other bulbs on the car will not show up, what if i get a canbus one??

Does my car has auto-levelling??

thanks Maj

Generally it would be cheaper to find the parts second hand via breakers, eBay etc.

No it just means the car is coded to know it has xenons. HIDs draw less power than a standard halogen bulb, so without coding the car thinks the bulb is faulty and shows the bulb failure warning. Once the car is coded, if the hid light should fail, it will still throw up the bulb warning as normal.

If your car had halogens from the factory, it doesn't have auto-levelling.

Forget it, I'll think I'll go hid lol. Any particular colour/temp so it don't look stupid??

4300K is the same as OEM.

It's not illegal, I.E, you'll not go to jail for it, or get a criminal record. It just shouldn't pass MOT, however mine did this year :)

I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of things that are illegal but won't get you throw in jail or a record ;)

This is possibly a better set up than Bi Xenon's though.

I have adaptive xenon's on my A4 and had an issue with the flap not working.

A very small plug had come loose inside the lamp housing and failed the mot.

Luckily I managed to fix it, but a lot of hassle as the bumper had to come off, to get the headlight fitting out.

Without opening the HID can of worms... they aren't illegal and will not fail an MOT providing they have a legal beam pattern.

The MOT failure is if headlight washers or self leveling devices are fitted with Xenon headlights they must work. If they dont work it will fail the MOT.

If they are not fitted then they cannot be tested + therefore they cannot fail an MOT.

There is currently NO MOT fail for headlight washers/ levelers missing.

Legality and the MOT as two different things, as you state the MOT won't check for devices that aren't fitted even if they should be to meet the ECE regs that gave the vehicle type approval to be used.

Might be worth reading this: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=3431470&postcount=1

From what I understand, if the kit is 2000lm or less then you can avoid the washers and leveling requirements but as most (all?) 35W kits are likely to be above that threshold they aren't legal unless those requirements (and probably some others) are met.

I'm not against aftermarket kits as long as the owner/driver of that vehicle ensures they are clean, correctly adjusted and not causing glare to other road users. This also applies to stock halogen/HID/LED systems as they can also be badly aligned causing the same issues.

I put London colour HID kit on my FL MK2 and it was OK but had to set the manual height adjuster down a little bit as the beam cut off went a bit higher with the HIDs.

But took them out after a couple of weeks as it needed coding to clear the fault lamp and didn't know anyone down this way.

I have a full 5000k hid kit sat in my garage free to a good home but cannot be bothered posting, I'm in the southwest if someone wants to collect, it was fully working when I took it out :)

I hate Hid's in standard halogen lamps they are awful and dazzle the hell out of me.
