Turbo refurbishment - question for the experts any help please?

Featured Replies

I've now got hold of my Garrett PD130 spare, a GT1759VA. Came off a 2003 Golf. Unknown miles.

Its very dirty all round inside and out (needs dismantling and a thorough clean with petrol, I guess), but seems usable, no damage to the fins of the core on either side for a start.

However there isn't any in-out play but a tiny bit of side to side play on the inlet side, I'm not altogether happy with maybe a mm or so ?

Is this usable? Or I have to replace the CHRA anyway ? This is the actual turbo bearings that cause this isn't it.

I have a choice to either replace the CHRA with something like below - or risk it as it is with the slight play?

This is as a spare so I also have a further 2 choices, risk it with the KKK on the car and see how far she goes and hope she doesn't blow up (not favoured), or do something about it before it blows (I prefer this idea!)

Weighing up the costs if I DO dismantle its going to cost about £150 odd for the CHRA and all the seals etc. Versus about double that if I get turbo specialists to do it for me instead (or even further if it was to be hybridised)?

What to do, what to do.

I'm not an expert but from previous experience with turbo's side to side play is fine(if minimal)

It's the in and out play that you really have to watch as ther should be pretty much none.

From wot i've read about the KKK turbo's is its very hit and miss with them so just replacing a turbo with all the costs involed seems a bit unnecessary if its running well.

have you checked the play/condition of the KKK you have on the car at present?

There should be no play at all, side play wrecks seals, endfloat wrecks impellers. Either way your turbo's no good.

Ignore that,

The standard turbos do not have a full bearing in them. They are floated on oil so if there is not oil pressure then there will be a small amount of play in the shaft.

A millimetre seems excessive for an oil shell. Snapper.

Thanks but I think its what techie says (thanks for that) confirming that it uses oil as part of the floating bearing or whatever ? Its the in and out play that is what you are NOT looking to have.

The SPARE turbo has no axial play, in and out at all (good). It has some radial play but I now understand that is okay because its just the type of bearing it uses? It shows no signs of having scored the turbines on the manifold on either side.

Cheers guys looks like I have a good one here like the ebay shop said, ready to use !

I guess my only question is how to clean it if I decide to do that, i.e. should I bother to dismantle it and replace any seals any parts or just keep it as it is and just try it out ?

My KKK does seem to be running fine so far so maybe what Chris says also rings true so don't touch it yet until I seem to have any problems! I have just been getting anxious thanks to looking at the threads with dubious turbos !

If it ain't broke...

But least you have a spare if anything does happen.
