"Phantom" fabia II vRS estate

Featured Replies

I only had them out the once at Combe but the upgrade to LCR Brembo's was enormous.

The bite on the brakes was strong and with a very high and easily modulated pedal.

I ran XDS on the lowest setting to avoid over heating them and on Redstuff only got a pedal to the floor situation once all day due to overheating.

Of all the mods I have stripped these are actually what I miss the most, even just for day to day driving because you get so used to having the added stopping power and stock setup is much further behind compared to engine or even handling.

How much was that LCR BRembo setup if you do not mind me asking and where did you get it from?

well done....its good to see you are finally braking hard enough now....lol.

As a temporary and cheap fix you can try running some cooling ducts under your front bumper and into the wheel well via the small hole in the inner guard to at least keep them a bit cooler. I have done this for my last 2 track days and it has helped. Also be aware that the electronics are using the brakes to help turn the car into the corners. So they don't get much of a rest.

both of you have said what I'm going to do... at how fast , I'm going to ask Jason to turn my XDS down from the middle setting to the lowest.... think this may help the front pads :)

I bought in bits, calipers and lines only to start with and then added the consumables new.

Just sold it for a pinch under £500 complete with pads, nearly new EBC slotted discs and HEL braided lines.

I bought from a Brisky member complete with a full refurb kit for the hard lines etc and a beautiful recently done powder coating.

At under £500 I think they were a bargain

Also check the fronts for the tread splitting across the tyre (a line all the way from left to right). It is not a major problem but just be aware of it. Will only happen on the drive wheels. Tyre rep here in oz says it is only cosmetic. Have seen and heard about it on more then one car running federals.

They do split you are correct, however I have worn through this, all four had the line across now none have a line across, in fact the two front have very little in the way of tread around the edges either, these will become the rears for the next few sessions.

I have a cunning plan for some slicks before how fast..... maybe  ;)

Slicks can be tricky, if compound not correctly suited to the car it will either never heat up and will have no grip whatsoever or if too soft the car will destroy the tyres.

The advice I got was that my car will not be able to heat them up enough and keep them at correct temps to justify slicks.

If all works well and rubber is working the loads on suspension are severely increased and bucket seats are also advised or at least a harness.

But hey, I'd love to see MK2 vRS on slicks at some point! 4Motion Golf would be OK as well ;)

Unfair advantage! :p

Actually, your Yeti Richard would be perfect to have slicks on come to think about it. You could get ridiculous cornering speeds and really short breaking distances :)

Jabo, Golf has buckets seats, it has 5 point harnesses and it also has no problem getting all four tyres to a good temperature, so I will give them a try on a second set of wheels, I can then have a comparison against the Federals.

Richard, I need every advantage I can get against you and Jason.

Sounds good - you did not give me a passenger ride so  I do not know ;).

It is a pity I will not be able to see you guys in action at Bedford... I suppose there will be plenty of dash cam vids, spectator vids and lots of good stories to read about the event on here :).

Do you know which slicks and what compound are you going for?

Yes, and where are you buying them from?

Slicks will be to road rally tyres off Demon Tweeks, about £70 a corner, medium compound, if they are rubbish not too much money spent, if they are good, happy days

as James said, our tyre people say its normal for the RSR's, we have all had it, and had no problem with them :)

and slicks?! don't "how fast" say must be on road legal tyres? :P

Rally spec tarmac slicks are technically road legal due to small indents that bare a vague similarity to a bit of tread.

It's what Mr Mayo uses on his 440(ish)bhp Octy at Castle Combe, where they also insist cars are road legal.

I think Bedford don't care though...

If James buys them I'm getting some full spec racing slicks. ;)

I've seen them on the octy, and looked at them before, but not in my size..... as long as they are "e-marked" lol...

And I was hoping to be the winner at Bedford...no chance now :D

Then quite obviously I am going to say "I am James and I am not buying any form of slick, be it road legal or otherwise" See you in Bedford shod with Federal 595 RS-R's :giggle:  ;)

REALLY happy with 5th place... (fiesta was DQ for hitting cones)  I dare say I was the fastest car with an UNMODIFIED engine :) looks good for the CTHE!

better brakes and a FARB and I will go faster :)

You have some skills Dave...I'm happy with my result bearing in mind mine was the one with the least amount of power (exc. CitiGo) and it was my second track day...;)
