Apple Lightning Connector and MDI

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried using one of the latest Apple devices with a Lightning Connector port with the MDI fitted in a Skoda/VAG?

Is it just a matter of using an adapter for the Apple MDI 30 pin connector or will this not work?

If someone has tried this do you still retain full functionality over the Apple device?

Just looking to buy wife an iPod Nano and I see it now comes with the lightning connector and not the 30 pin.

Isn't there a lightening mdi cable?

There may well be, but currently I have two 30 pin MDI cables (one for each car) and I hadn't thought about that.

Just taken a look on Ebay and couldn't find one. Will ask the dealer if there is one.

I'd be interested in this too.

iOS 7 is very fussy about non genuine cables now, especially on a 5S.

MDI should work fine with the official APPLE lightning converter, its third party ones where the problems lie with iOS7.

As far as I am aware, there is no official MDI lightning cable yet.

Thanks all, will check with the dealer this morning when I pick up the Octy as to whether there is an official Lightning/MDI cable but as others have said, I will not hold my breath.

I may just look for a second hand iPod for the wife with the original 30 pin adapter. Going for a brand new one will just add additional cost to buy the damn adapter. Well, I guess that is progress though.

Why buy another iPod just for the car? SD cards are a whole lot cheaper and you can just leave them in the car and not worry about cables and theft etc.

Because it is for the wife's Monte, not the Octy so there is no option to use an SD card.

Fair enough -I had a USB stick in my Fabia MDI -they're even cheaper then SD cards

Yep, and very happy with it as well. Even the kids now fit in the boot in comfort (and I have tried it out)

Thanks for the constructive help :)

Yes, I agree that mobile phone chargers should be standardised, but then this has been talked about for [many] years. Because lets face it, everyone else accept Apple use the same adapter don't they? Well they might these days but previously they were all different, even within the same brand e.g. Motorrolla, HTC, Nokia Sony Ericsson etc. And even where they did use the same adapter they would be slightly different voltages so that even then the charger was not universal.

But I do believe that progress is being made, allegedly

Replace the MDI/iPhone cable with a MDI/USB cable (Less than a tenner off eBay) and use a USB stick.

Their is a official cable on the way the golf is going to be supplied with one very shortly

Thats good to know that the official adapter works, I have heard that third party ones may not.

That will also be good, but the price for them is extortionate. I noticed in the Octy brochure that the Matsumi adapter (I presume there is one for USB as well as the Appple 30 pin) is £50! The dealer when I picked up the Octy urged move to remove my existing cable if I hadn't already which I had.
