Octavia braking question

Featured Replies

Hi again.

Got an Octavia Elegance 1.6 AT with front disc brakes, and normal rear (dont know how to call them).

The car has ABS system.

I will try to explain the problem.

If I apply FULL BRAKES (lets say going 40-50kmh)

I can feel the brake pedal moving (going back and forth)

Is this normal?

The tires wont even screech. A year ago I had a collision with a 4x4 tha suddenly braked harshly, I hit the brakes on time, but still slammed him in the rear  (good thing I didnt bust the radiator :D ) Thing is, I feel I had enough space not to hit the car, I something wrong with my brakes? (the car does stop!!! believe me, Im driving it right now!!!!).

Thanx

Giulio

That juddering of the brake pedal is the ABS working ..stopping the wheels from locking

He's right just the ABS nothing to worry about

When the ABS comes in, you have to brake firmly, dont lift off at all.

you say when you press the brake pedal hard it moves backward and forwards. is it a harsh moving backward and forward or is it quite gentle moving?

There are two sides to ABS - 1) it prevents skidding by not allowing any of your wheels to lock under heavy braking. The way it does this: it reduces brake pressure on the wheel which is about to lock. This happens in a fraction of a second. 2) However, this does reduce the overall braking efficiency and most probably is the reason why you hit the 4*4.

I thought the only situation where ABS did not help you stop faster was in snow+ice, where locking the wheels actually helps to stop, because snow builds up in front of the tyres and helps with braking...

Nope, you're right: http://www.dervman.com/abs.htm

Good description there of why
