Coolant light / VAGcom in Swindon?

Featured Replies

Right I'm staying out in the welsh valleys at the moment with work, so I woke up this morning turned over the engine and it came to life first time and then noticed the coolant light flashing on the dash, so I quickly killed the engine checked the coolant level and it was between min and max. So I decided to turn on the engine again and same thing. Anyway due to my location and work being in Bridgend I decided to drive and see whether I could get into the office and nothing happened, the temperature stayed below 90 on the gauge and didn't go over. When I checked the coolant after getting in to work it was at the max mark.

So I've been in work for an hour or two, gone out reset the light after reading another thread on here and it hasn't come back on. Turned on the engine and again the coolant level was between min and max and after leaving to idle for a few mins it had reached the max mark.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what may have caused the light to come on? I'll have to drive back to Swindon tonight so hoping it doesn't but I'll try again tomorrow morning when it's stone cold to see what happens.

Also has anyone got a vagcom in or around Swindon I could plug in to just to check for any fault codes.

Dirty prongs in the expansion bottle, usually worse on cold mornings, get a toothbrush or lolly stick and give them a scrape.

Hi Gambo,

Chuck a PM to someone on this list near you:

I can help out if you still require it, I'm often around Swindon way, but to be fair I don't fancy the journey if it's not needed - sorry! :)

Ah thanks for the thread I was looking for that earlier. Also thanks for the offer, but I'll see what happens after I've tried what David suggested / if it comes back. Plus to save you hassle if I did want to use it I'd come down your and give you beer tokens as it's only fair :)

Fingers crossed David's solution helps you out!

this keeps happening to me, like you first time this happened panic mode kill the engine and investigate coolant level all fine fire it up again and it switches off, i find it does it if parked on a slope. if it does it know i just turn off the ignition and re-start the car.

If cleaning the coolant level sensor prongs doesnt sort it you require a new coolant expansion bottle. They are only around £7 from a main dealer and maybe £5 for some genuine coolant (to top up after fitting) :).

I always change them when i get a new (used) car because for the price of a new one it makes the engine bay look loads better than a mucky yellowy one ;)

Hi to anyone reading this in the future. I had the same issue with the coolant red light flashing on my skoda fabia but not reporting any fault codes on my diagnostic tool.

I suspected it reported low coolant level and looking at the coolant expansion tank it look a bit worst for wear (i.e being a bit mucky inside then tank but coolant colour was good). There is a sensor in the coolant expansion tank that detects the coolant level and it unserviceable so you must change the complete coolant expansion tank.

I have replaced the coolant expansion tank and the coolant light never flashed again. So before you consider changing coolant sensor or thermostat try this first as this is the low cost solution you can try.
