Underseat subwoofer

Featured Replies

Going to get a new subwoofer at the weekend, and i spotted some underseat subwoofers for a similar price

Does anybody have one or no if they any good?

I can't imagine there would be enough space for one, but what do I know!

I might measure up and see if one would fit not sure how practical it would be to have it under the passenger seat but wondering if i will see a difference in sound quality with the sub being nearer the front rather than all the way in the boot

Bass is generally non-directional ,so it shouldn't make a difference where you put a sub as far as sound quality is concerned. Tweeters/midrange need careful placement. Think of how those home cinema speakers are divided up.

I'd have thought the under seat ones as for folks who wish to keep their boot empty?

tweeters and decent speakers are on the list aswell the standard ones are diabolical, i'm not overly bothered about boot space the sub i have at the minute takes practically the whole boot up and is a just a massive deadweight

unsure wether to order one and try it out

I've heard the alpine under seat ones from a few years ago and was quite surprised and sound out of them. They were a complete unit with built in amp. My only worry would be cooling. And make sure you block of the heater vent if you go that route

I had one about 5 years ago and wasn't that good, not very bassy and if your going from a proper sub and amp to one I think you'd be disappointed but that was 5 years ago so might be alot better now

I was thinking the other day about trying to install a small sub in the box under the passenger seat. Or fabricating a small box to fit under the seat to fit in the storage box place. But thinking was as far as I got lol

I have being trying to find a one with similar power to what i have at the minute which is only 1000w, it would be ideal if i can find somewhere that has them on display or someone who i actually running one so i can listen to it first hand,

Thats a good point about vents i would probablies not even realised until it was too late haha

Its ither try a underseat sub or fubreglass one into my boot?

Another thing to consider with a smaller sub box will be that there'll be little space in the box for resonance, so there's a chance it will sound quite harsh/odd/flat.

When you look at home HIFI stuff, the reason floorstander speakers give smoother, clearer bass than bookshelves, even though the drivers may not be bigger is because the box allows longer bass frequencies to resonate more, effective amplifying those frequencies. However if you just want something that sounds like flatulence in McDonalds car park, either will do fine.  :giggle:

Also, I bet you'd rarely ever use all of those 1000 watts. That's getting into concert venue PA territory for power.

I would be interested to see what route you decide to go down and if you see if there is any problems/negatives with it.

Only reasons for getting one really, IMO; is if you need the space in the boot or you're worried about weight.

Though: Space under the seats for a CD changer plus an amp. Plus the carpet's got a cutout for wiring (for CD changer etc) on the passenger side.

Best "slim" sub I've heard of is a long flat Pioneer thingy. They're around £280 these days. Though ISTR they're cheaper if you can euro-import them.

I was in halfords yesterday and i asked the staff member if he had installed any underseat subs, just so i could get some sot of first person view on it as i dont know anyone who has one or has used one, his reply was that he had installed a few and that he wouldnt recommend getting one i would be wasting my time, i have some vibe speaker on order and now i am in between building a fibre glass sub enclosure, or buy a sub with a enclosure and stick to the norm?

and could anybody reccommend a decent subwoofer, i am not a massive basshead but i like some bass behind my music if you know what i mean

I'm no audiophile but I had a cheap Fli sub, active so it was all built in, seemed ok for what I wanted.

I had a jbl sub it was quality the enclosure box weighted a ton though!

They are not very good for what you pay for them, even the budget subs (Vibe, JBL, etc, like the ones in Halfords) that you can pick up second hand for under £50 are better, only downside is that they will take up more then half of your boot space

But for what you would essentially pay for an under seat one, you should be able to get a top of the range second hand one if you keep an eye on Gumtree and eBay for a few days

If I was ever going to upgrade my in car audio again, I would start with the speakers first.

May even be that I don't even need a sub (i don't listen to loud music while driving)

I have bought some vibe speakers for the front just waiting for them to be delivered! i have seen a few subs for quite cheap most of them being sony xplod they have very mixed reviews on them very mixed!

I has a ripspeed under seat sub in my old car and it was pretty good!

Google "DIY spare wheel subwoofer ". Quite a few ideas out there. Though to do it properly, you'd have to relocate the jack and tools. Though IMO there's adequate space around the rear wheelarches to accomplish that. Might need to lose 1/2" to 1" of boot floor to accommodate grille/protection, acoustic carpet etc. Oh, and somewhere to fit the amp and wiring of course. Though an amp doesn't need to be in the boot. Could run a 4 channel under the passenger seat with 2 channels bridged and filtered for the sub.

Guys, now I'm taking the liberty of bumping an old thread instead of starting a new one. I have a 2003 Mk1 "Comfort Combi" (Fabia Estate), and currently planning on installing a underseat subwoofer. I've looked on this thing, which is told to give "descent" sound (well, not for an audiofile, of course) for a resonable (approx 90 Brittish pounds) price.

Anyways, will I be able to fit it under the passenger seat? I've tried to measure the space in between the floor and the seat, but it's really hard. I've tried finding the data online, but so far nothing. Does anyone here know for certain? As you may see, the sub I'm looking at is 349 x 239 x 70 mm. What do you guys think? Should I completely surrender to bringing this project home?

Cheers!
