Raspy noise from engine/exhaust

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Hope somebody can help me before I take my Skoda to the garage on Monday morning. Took the car out this afternoon for a drive (only 4 miles) and on arrival at my destination I noticed that my car was making a raspy noise, the kind you get with a pathetic attempt to make it sound sporty or addition of a sports exhaust. As far as I can ascertain the noise is either coming from the front end of the exhaust where it connects to the engine or the engine compartment itself.

I may just not have noticed this before, but there is also a sound of air escaping (a puff type sound) when I initially depress the accelerator with the car stationary and the bonnet popped.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be, serious or minor? Would like an idea before I need to take to my mechanic. It's a 2006 Fabia 1.4 16V (100BHP) 71,000 miles. Recently had all filters changed and the throttle body removed and cleaned. It has run fine since service and MOT in April, and I've not done a lot of miles since then.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Mike

p.s - we did have our first frosty morning yesterday so this could come into play.

Exhaust could be blowing ever so slightly.

Exhaust could be blowing ever so slightly.

When you say blowing, what exactly do you mean? A hole, a leak,or something worse?

Could be a hole or leak to be fair

I mean a hole or a leak. It should be fairly easy to find. The area that's leaking will be black and sooty. Alternatively to check if it really is leaking, stick your hand over the end of the exhaust. If it's leaking you'll hear better where it's coming from. If it's not leaking, the engine will struggle or even stop :)
