Warning on Spark Plugs 1.4 TSI CAVE VRS, (& CTHE)'check the spark plugs!'

Take them out and inspect them and check the gap then.  & if the plugs are fine keep trying to find the reason for the misfires.

In those threads i linked with members using the NGK you will find a few of these engines went on to fail, became oil users, burnt valves or pistons,

but then they were remapped, but that is not unusual.   At least you know what might happen, so see how you get on.

Plenty of Twincharger owners on the forum over the past 7 years trying various things and learning from the failures...

  • I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

  • Here's mine today when I removed them for compression test, 11,000 km on them currently. I think they can comfortably go to 20K (km) ?

What do you think to the condition of these Denso plugs?

Been in about 5-6 k

We have put the NGK in for now but I'll see if that little misfire has disappeared ( seems to have done so far )

and might get another set of Denso in it.

How many miles has your car done, and whats the engines history?

Look OK apart from the one that is getting oiled and then cooked.

The cylinder you probably have the misfire in and that has the valves might be looking ropey.

??

What DENSO Plugs are they.

Maybe go with different ones, shorter reach.

CAVE engine had no mods done. Uses very little oil.

Full service history up to 50k (ish) and it now has 68k (serviced at a VW specialist from when I got the car at 52k onwards.

Ill get the number off the Denso plugs later

Seems to have cured the slightest misfire under load though changing the plugs

These are the DENSO i use.

So the cars had a good drive today around Lincolnshire, and to be honest it's never driven so smooth.

A coincidence on changing the plugs?

Picture not related really but it's one of my favourite

Is the second picture of Genuine, NGK & Denso?

OEM VW 2nd issue plugs on the left after 25,000 miles,

the Denso from the same cylinder the VW/Audi burnt out plug was in after 30,000 miles.

These are the Denso plugs i put in after oil fixes i think they are the same. Decided that i am changing them every service anyway now even though only 5k a year in mileage.

Least will get to see the condition of them and ask person taking them out to number them in pen. 1,2,3,4 matching to the cylinder

Seems like a waste of money really, but when you see them the first time out you will know.

2 years & 10,000 miles really should not be an issue with those DENSO plugs.

Tuning shop has confirmed my 'boost problem' was a spark plug problem, The iridium tip has broken off on cylinder 3 again. Said no damage to engine, or at least it sounds ok....

The tech guy@ tuning shop said he does not reccomend iridiums and he did warn me of this before i put them in when he mapped it. Said he prefers Platinums

For now he has put some bosch in.

Will upload picture later when i pick up. Anyone know any good links for platinums? Not impressed with the Denso's & i if myself and 'S27 VEJ' has seen improvements taking the Denso's out then they cant be that good.

These DENSO are IRIDIUM / Platinum .   They have run well at Stage 1 & Stage 2 and i have never heard of a premature failure before.

Are these what you had fitted, and how long ago and how many miles?

It will be good to see pics of the burnt out one.

PS

Surely burned off and not broken off if no damage done.

EDIT. I see from the link in your post that they are these plugs. & only 5,000 miles covered..

Please let us know what Bosch plugs are now fitted.

Your Remap is not a REVO Stage 1 is it?

Are you prepared to say by who?

yes i mentioned them before ADE tuning. Links of the Dyno on my profile page. Car sounded amazing

The Bosch plugs for a Audi A1 1.4TFSI 136kw Twincharger are 'FR6H1332'  or they used to be.

Broken Denso on the Left has managed only 1200 miles (4months) since car was tuned. (Cause of my recent loss of Power) - no EML Dash lights though

Broken NGK on the right lasted around 4000 Miles (9 months) - but this one came from an untuned oil burner.

Tuning shop has advised against Iridiums as has blown many of them on the ramp on Audi, VW Subaru's and advised to go Platinum.

So the hunt is on for some Platinums that are the right size.

If a platinum breaks a tip (which is also unheard of) then said it could be injector issue.... as the problem plug came from cylinder 3 (AGAIN)

Not good.

How many miles has your engine done?

These are out of a Stage 2 CAVE after over 15,000 miles.

Nearly at the 38,000 stage,

These VW ones below were fitted@ Service Aug 2016 in order of cylinder 1,2,3,4. (remember I had the oil issue Aug to Oct for consumption test )

Skoda forgot to put the Denso in October 2016 during the 5 oil fixes.

So it was NGK IR version running 2015 to 2016 (9 months) (was first plug tip breakage)

then :

NGK VW AG Plugs fitted by Skoda at Major Service Sep - Dec 2016 (below)

then:

Denso Dec 2016 until April 2017 (earlier post) - Car tuned

now (temporary):

Bosch Iridiums (not sure of part no.)

on your pic the 4th tip looks the best compared to the others.

Ive emailed opie oils to see what platinums are available as look up tool doesn't give anything

This is the exact type that is fitted now just had email confirming. Had long country spin this morning - all is well, next annual service is in 1500 miles (4 months) so can review the Bosch ones then.

See how they go then, i know that the Bosch plugs were no better then the NGK OEM that acted the same in the Audi A1 185ps as the other twinchargers.

I know Audi techs that fitted the DENSO instead.

think I'm revising the vrs mk2 spark plug check to once every 3 months or 1000 miles whichever is sooner unless there is diamond / titanium plug out there! Lol
