Would thinners damage a cotton green filter?

Featured Replies

If I were to use it as the cleaning agent, as mine's all gone and I have loads of oil left... and a 25 litre drum of thinners I could pinch some of....

maybe a 50% mix with water? How nasty is thinners - I know its good for cleaning hammerite off paint brushes ;) but what about the black gunk off a cotton green filter?

DO NOT USE THINNER ON ANY PAPER OR COTTON FILTER JASON!!!

You nuts?? Even with water it'll eat the plastic away man. AND the cotton. And paper. You might as well remove the air filter and drive without one if you're gonna do that.

I have to find something to clean it with soon though - It'll be in the new airbox shortly. How about a liberal soaking with some sudsied up swarfega.

Decided that brake cleaning fluid type stuff would be a lot more mild on the filter so will be loading up the compressor airgun with that and blowing the muck straight out the filter.:thumbup:

Thinners? What was I thinking?!

I think soapy water was was proven to be adequate Jason. Wasn't there a thread sometime ago on here.

Could aways say bugger the expense and invest a tenner on the proper cleaning kit from Halfrauds.

Yep mild detergent mixed with plenty of water should be fine to get it clean :D

Yes this is exactly what I did yesterday.

My filter was pretty clogged (wondered why it was starting to smoke so much - had blamed it on the hot weather)

Used air filter cleaner to start with to get most of it off and then left it soak in soapy water. looked much better and is now oiled up and back in car.

Not sure its placebo effect but the car is flying again and seems to be breathing so much better :)

So Fairy liquid will do the job pretty much then? As long as its rinsed well with water and left to dry thoroughly before oiling?

Never considered using Fairy to be honest. :o
