Kenwood Music Keg - Aka Phatnoise

Featured Replies

My ashtray is my current CD storage - probably why I need to brasso them on a regular basis?

I would SO love to have an MP3 unit.. Would save on all my CD copying and storing in the glovebox... :speaker:

Ahem............................................

Rob, the Skoda HU was getting slung out anyway it was just a matter of time! lol

The iPod is fine to connect up straight in to a HU via the AUX-in connector (provided the HU has a dedicated AUX-in facility). All you have to do is get a decent HU, the correct cable and your laughing. I wouldn't personally bother with FM mod and/or that tape adaptor thingy.

:D :D

Cheers

Rob (my decisions are always based on sound reasoning :D )

I can't spot a flaw in that reasoning, Rob. Priceless argument there... :D

Can get 10Gb and 20Gb cartridge for the keg. The Alpine stuff sounds fantastic, but the 6 disc changer wouldn't hold as much as the Keg. However, there are other issues to consider than just raw storage size - one of mine was "how many MP3s do I actually have anyway?"... :D

Actually 4 Gigs worth at the moment. But that's not accounting for some serious and nerdy A/D conversion I am planning in the near future.

(I have this knack of listening to my old vinyl and cassettes once in a while, so why not let the sound card listen along?)

So definitely Keg-bound!

30 as in 'three zero' or 'thirty' or 'one more than 29' get it...........?? That's right, folks there's 30G available with an iPod ;)

Just a suggestion,mind...............:D :D

Cheers

Hugh

Does everyone really need 30G of memory?

I suppose it's like saying do you need 220bhp..........it's there if it's needed.

Damn...answered my own question.:(

lol

I like my mstation - it's kinda crude in storage but thats also it's strength.

Uses standard IDE drives, so will always have plenty of storage, 20gb in at the moment, and as prices tumble I will no doubt throw a larger drive in and put the 20gb in the PC.

Something tells me a 20GB "keg" will cost more than a 20GB IDE drive!

Can the ipod drive be swapped out? My folks have a Creative Labs DAP with a 6gb drive, but again is just a standard laptop hdd so can easily be upgraded as your collection increases \ storage prices decrease.

That was kind of my point... :D It's not just needing 30Gb though...it's needing 30Gb in one place so that you don't have to change discs ever...which would mean I'd be doing a lot of non-stop driving to justify it to myself... :D

Rob.

Or just never having to swap discs, ever :D

(I'm lazy like that :D)

actually, it's not that you want to listen to 30gb's worth in one trip, it's being able to be on a journey, even just coming home from work, and thinking "I really fancy listening to....." and it just being there at your fingertips.

And spending most of the journey searching through 30Gb of files to find it... ;)

I guess maybe I have a higher rate of churn on my songs than you do!

Rob.

Depends on how you have structured your folders \ how easy the head unit is to navigate.

With mine, it's only difficult if you have organised your folders badly, but with basic genres then artists A-Z it's very quick and easy.

"rate of churn"? You been making butter again?

But even with folders that are well structured, surely it's still a hefty number of folders?

"Rate of churn"...y'know, out with the old, in with the new... :D

Rob.

I'm lazy the other way - my 6 CDs go round and round in rotation until I'm really bored with them. I could never raise the enthusiasm to go searching for a particular album/track whilst on the move.

That's because you can't hear them properly with those standard speakers... ;)

Rob.

heh, my rate of churn is more like "out with the new, in with the old!"

Nope it's cos I'm tired and I just wanna get home ... or I'm tired and I'm concentrating on getting to work in one piece :D

Curious to know how an IDE drive responds to the bumping in your car. Or is there some kind of anti-bump mechanism in the mstation car cradle (or whatever it's called)?

There are two things...

1) the drive holder is very well damped \ held in place

2) the files are not played direct from the HDD, but from memory, so it can never (in theory) skip as it's playing from solid state.

and modern drives are far more resistant than they used to be...:)

also in the 4x4 the suspension is well suited to hdd protection - unlike my RS in whichj the std changer skipped.. hence me going mp3:D

Umm, hate to say it, but agree with Paul - the 4x4 may be better suited to not skipping such devices... (I throw it about a bit tho, really!)

what about the 4x4?

fnar :p

Not if you look at the initial setup, here in NL at least. 850 euros for the 10 GB Keg, 922 euros for the 10 GB mstation. I gather there have been some issues between Traxdata and the Benelux distributor too (no software updates etc.), which are making me pretty wary...

How does that compare to the UK?
