Swapping ECU's

Featured Replies

Morning all . Ive got the chance to have my dad's estate Vrs and was wondering if its possible to swap the ECU's out of my car into his and his in to mine ?

Only reason I want to do this is because im running a stage 2 on my Vrs and the plan is to swap all my bits over on to his without having to take my map off mine and get his remapped again .

Mines a 2001 on a Y Reg and his is a 53 I think .

It's possible, but you would need to recode each ECU to each car. To do that you'll need the login codes for the immobilisers and a programming tool such as VCDS.

Thanks for the reply . If the ECU's was swapped over would the cars be driveable ? Or would they be stuck there and need someone to come out with a VCD'S to reprogram it all ? Would I need to find the login codes also or can they be found using the VCD'S ?

They wouldn't start due to the immobiliser. Also VCDS won't help, you need something like vag tacho to code the immobilisers.

its a straight swap but you must swap terminal 42 for terminal 96 at engine ECU as this replicates the donor vehicle. Cheers :whew:

Is it ? So why is shark telling me it wont be a straight swap without a VCD, s ? And someone else saying a VCD's wont work I need a vag tacho . Got 3 different answers lol

Sharks reply is old news fella. Trust me on this as ive tried it myself and it works , it has something to do with fooling the bios system in the ECU mate.

VCDS can reset the immobiliser if you've got the SKC codes for both cars

Ross-tech wiki page for immobiliser functions

The SKC codes orginally came on a strip of plastic attached to the spare keys, probably long gone

vag-tacho can also do the same task, but also extract the SKC if you don't have it

Why go through all that hassle??  Just keep the estate standard.  The extra weight and lesser handling of the estate will make the tuning parts pointless imo.  The saloon is a better performing car as it weighs less and handles better.  An estate is for lugging extra weight and taking your pet dogs out for the day, its not a serious fast road car, unless its an RS6.

Weight wise there wasn't much in it , nothing that will be life changing anyway . I do agree on the handling is different though but I wont be racing it around corners etc due to the family and maybe the dog in the back the odd days lol . It just will make life alittle easier having an estate but does sound a lot of hastle with the ECU . Might be worth taking the stage 2 off mine and getting it remapped again to the car .

VCDS will do it if you have the SKC. VCDS isn't capable of reading the SKC itself

Vagtacho is capable of reading the SKC & programming the immob

I also don't see the point in "fooling the bios" swapping terminals when you can have it done properly for not much trouble or money.
