1400 AFH 16V conversion question - threads merged

Featured Replies

Ok thats good, i would have probably used the egr but the stainless steel manifold i brought off someone had the hole welded up.

Next problem i have is its been so long since i took the driveshafts out i cant remember how far they are meant to push in.

This is the furthest i can get the offside one into the gearbox, has to go in more than that doesnt it?

  • Thought i would update on my 1.6 afh. Mine is now finnished after finally sorting the exhaust out, went for the diesel system and the 1.6 16v cat. Also had to change the gearbox as mine was broke so

  • AFH (finally) on its way in...   Following advice from Teflon Tom I did not follow the Haynes book but dropped the gearbox off and out downwards first then lifted the engine out. I'm convinced this

Needs to go in all the way against the oil seal. I ended up holding the driveshaft straight and GENTLY tapping the hub nut end with a soft hammer. May not be best way but no amount of jiggling worked for me otherwise.

Exhaust on. EGR wiring done. VCDS stuff done.

Had a drive, certainly goes a bit. Just the undertrays to go back on now....oh and those big brakes.

goes a bit :wonder:  try doubling that power then see what it feels like

Yes must be scary. Big thanks for all your help and advice.

Does the AFH have a rev limiter? Assuming so when does it kick in?

Yes, it's ecu controlled, can't remember what rpm it comes in though off hand, it's its 2 stages iirc sort of like a soft limit where it starts to retard the ignition timing and miss every 3rd spark at one set point, then once the other set point is reached it's hard cut to kill all sparks and fuel... However this doesn't stop you missing a gear on the motorway and over revving it.

Would this fit with air con...

Yes I can't see why not, you would need to use the ecu from an aircon model, and the wiring would need sorting out too.

Is the 1.6 loom the same as 1.4 apart from egr

Is the 1.6 loom the same as 1.4 apart from egr

That's the only extra connector but you have to do a bit of unwrapping of the 1.6 loom to get everything to fit as the sensors and throttle body are in different positions on the 16V.

The only cut you should need to make is to splice in the EGR power feed.

The EGR other wire goes to pin 5 on the big ECU plug. It will probably have a tiny white rubbery plug in the relevant hole which you can push out from beneath with a jeweler's screwdriver or similar. Inserting the extra connector is a doddle as long as you have not damaged it in removing from the Polo loom. It should click positively into place.

Are all ecu compatible with air con I say this as I have 3 1.6 all have ag on part numbers and 2 from none air con cars...

I've had a quick look at the Polo parts list on VAGCAT.com and there's only one ECU listed for the AFH engine code, that is no separate variant part number for air con.

Also from the same source as far as I can see the ECU on the 1.6 Felicia is the same one regardless of a/c fitted or not.

vagcat is wrong then, the afh engines have a specific ecu for aircon models, the ecu i gave you was an aircon variant part number ending in D iirc.

I defer of course but presumably then the Felicia ones uma1998 has from a/c and non-a/c cars must have different part numbers?

i'm not 100% certain, but the polo ones definitely have a specific ecu on the aee 1.6 engines for an aircon model, it may be possible to switch on the aircon functionality using a login code on the non-aircon type but i've never tried it so cant comment on this.

Now then air con would be nice......

Got a engine its got 130k on it just now need to find a polo ecu with air con and get the mounting bracket sorted then going to fit I the slxi engine bay to see if it clears the air con heater box if it does then I will fit it all in the fun....

Managed to get the driveshafts in eventually. Swapped the ecu over to the AFH one, engine started but then died after couple of seconds. Tonight a chap with vcds came out to the car and matched the immo up, tried the throttle adaption but couldnt find anything on the channel?(engine was cold) When the engines running it still idles high, about 1600rpm but it keeps on raising up to about 1900rpm then straight back down to 1600rpm then straight back up to 1900rpm and continues to run like that, even when the engines warmed up. There are no fault codes. Any ideas?

It took mine a couple of minutes to finish doing basic settings...there's no indication in VCDS that anything is happening but there will be a high pitched whine from the throttle body. Until I let it finish on the last of several attempts mine idled at about 2000rpm.

Looking at that pic there is not going to fit with air con :-(

That's a shame...I guess the only solution would be to use a different a/c unit that could fit somewhere else, but that's probably not worth the bother/expense.
