Squeeling Brakes

Featured Replies

I know this topic has been covered by other threads but nobody seems to have a cure for this. It's getting really, really annoying, I find myself braking with the handbrake when reversing now. Not too handy as I stay on a hill.

Took it back to the dealers last weekend but basically got "they all do that" cr@p.

I can't believe a company the size of VAG has no cure for this - any pointers for a fix.

Yeah, it's a real bind. Mine seems to have got worse over the last few weeks. It's due to go into the dealers tomorrow so I'l have a word and see if they can do anything. Will let you know how I get on.

Mine does this when reversing I thought it was just cos it is new and the brakes have to bed in fully when using in reverse,so is it just a characteristic of the car?

I believe it is very common with the Octavia VRs

Interestingly, my Astra did this afer the rear pads had covered 15k miles. Vaxhall changed the compond of the pads and the problem was solved. Perhaps the Octavia problems can be solved by using non-standard pads?

The guy at the garage said they had 5 or 6 RS's that do this, all he did was power wash the back brakes, test it and said they didn't seem so bad. This would seem strikingly obvious, they were still wet.

For some reason they don't sqeal if the car has been parked for some time with the handbrake on.

Nope mine does it with DS2500 pads.

I thought there was a fix with some kind of shims or something?

Lumox will know.

Took my Octy vRS into the dealers (Vindis Skoda, Cambridge) earlier this week for the same reason - third or fourth time it's been there for the same thing. Their general manager told me he's had two vRS's himself, both of which have had the same problem, and that he'd already spoken to the Skoda tech folks about it. He also said he's treating this as a fault, not a feature, which has got to be an improvement on some of the dealers others have posted about here.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, from what I can make out he had a response from Skoda yesterday with news of a fix due on 4th August. Apparently it involves "new cables" (presumably handbrake?) but that's all I could find out. They'll be using his vRS as a guinea pig and if it works mine'll be in for the new parts shortly afterwards.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Slightly off Topic but if its front brake squeel some pad manufactures do stick on anti Squeel pads for the back of the pad. Ive found that some specialist brake suppliers dont fit them always & sometimes have some lying around which can be bought for a few quid. the Copper grease fix didnt work on mine but the anti squeel pads did, Unfortunately Ive put a lot of heat into the brakes recently & squeeling is back so I might have melted the pads. Heat was enough to distort the plastic centre caps in the wheels ie fricken hot

Adrian, Im running Ds 2500's

mines back in AGAIN for the same trouble

As i said to the dealer , reacurring troubles that they fail to fix are a good way to loose future customers - Much as i love driving the vRS i will not put up with that bl**dy racket

I think the answer is in not accepting it - if the dealker replaces the pads and it starts ... then return time and time again - make it such a problem for skoda uk that they have to sort it!

all the while we sit back and moan but live with it , nothing will happen!! Mine will keep going back till they do fix the sodding thing

I look forward to hearing how that turns out - as I'm sure countless others on this site are.

Interestingly, my dealer has never come accross this and when he contacts Skoda they know nothing about this...........................

We are trialing a fix atm.

It envolves mounting rubber dampers onto the calipers. The noise isnt to do with the pads its a vibration from the caliper arangement.

For those of you who have been here long enough to know the trouble I got in with Skoda over broadcasting as yet un approved modifications this was the one that kicked it all off.

We have had a set on an Octavia vRS with 100% sucess thus far. I will report my findings to Skoda tech and hopefully we can get the ball actually moving faster as I started it rolling in January.

That's fantastic news, keep us posted...

Well customer services called me yesterday to say that the fix has a part number and is now available. So I've called the dealer and the car's booked in on the 20th Sept

According to the customer services girl the fix does not completely get rid of the noise but it is much quieter. Sounds good to me :D

They gave me the part no for the "fix" - 6X0698998

Can I say how pleased I am with Skoka Customer Services - they are very helpful and always get back to you quickly - they certainly make up for their dealer, but that's another story.

The garage have put it down to fitting new pads on worn disks and cerrtainly the trouble DID start when they were fitted which was now 20,000 miles ago.

As its not my money ( company car ) i told them to replace disks and pads (

vRS discs are allways vented. You cant swap between the two as the calipers and carriers are different.

thanks for that - odd never noticed before that the rear were :) any comment about the " cure "? - TBH i wasn't totally convinced but if it dont work they'll have the car back again

Its nothing to do with the actual brake lining themselves as far as i know, more to do with a resonance that develops in the rear beam when reversing and braking. Mk2 Golfs used to do the same thing and the repair kit that had its part number listed is pretty much the same kit as used back then.

interesting :)

mine were noisey in both directions and so far are ok but its early days yet

in a way i can see that new pads on a pitted/ridged disk surface could cause problems but TBH can't see why they wouldn't bed in and shut-up with time and if anything , they got worse :(

oh well - we'll see

well that was predictable..... reversing into a space toady and a familiar noise

cars back in AGAIN next week

its quiet going fowrads so far

Well I had the modification kit fitted last week and it has definately reduced the noise

When reversing at normal speeds it is always quiet now - no more using the handbrake to stop

I have had one occasion when I heard the old noise but that was when I was a bit over enthusiastic and was doing a 3 point turn in a hurry :o

I recommend getting the kit fitted for anyone who wants to reduce the noise massively...

My kit was fitted on Saturday, seems to have worked so far.

Hurrah!!

my dealer couldn't find that - spoke to cust services  its an o ( letter ) in that part number , not a 0 ( number ) as I read it :o

But that was the only useful thing i got from the so called customer services

They say the cure is not 100% and a 100% cure wont be available for " a few months" or so! Just to make it worse i said i wont it done but although the cars out of warranty ( 70,000 miles ) i asked for it to be covered as the garage have been sodding about trying to sort it for 20,000 miles ..... they refused saying they wont do it as its not a 100% certain cure! barstewards. I told them that with my mileage waiting that long is not acceptable and that putting up with the embarrasment of that noise will make sure this is my first and last Skoda.

Thats the case - I take it in again and if i get charged for the cure then thats it - as far as i'm concerned skoda can shove their new vRS up their rs - i was a little doubtful 'cos of the high price but they're " dont give a toss attitude " has made my mind up

bye bye Skoda  driving a car that sounds like a pair of elephants F*cking is just not acceptable

The noise is back. Not all the time like before but sometimes, just when you least expect it!
