Skoda Dance Radio / CD Player problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got a 2009 (59) Fabia 1.2. The CD player has always had problems with burnt CDs (both CD-Audio and mp3 CDs) - DISK ERROR message almost all the time.

Also, it won't play store-bought (pressed) CDs until it is warm in the car and only intermittently then.

I took it into my Skoda dealer a couple or times and they said it should only play pressed CDs. I allowed myself to be easily put off by this as I should have insisted they replace the unit or replaced it myself and taken them to small claims court to get reimbursement.

However, that's all too late now I think as it's out of the 3 year warranty period.

I've used a CD Cleaning disk.

Has anyone else had problems ? Resolved them ?

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers - Joe

Contact Skoda UK and lodge a formal complaint against the dealer who should have changed the head unit under warranty.

Stress the inability to play normal shop bought CD's, dont rattle on too much on about your home burnt discs, although as the Dance unit is an MP3 player, the only source of these would be on CDR/CDRW.

Threaten legal action as unit has always had a fault and the dealer has deliberately avoided trying to fix it.

Hi cannonballdaze, and welcome to the site.

Sorry to hear you are having a problem with your Dance head unit. I had exactly the same problem with my last Fabia's unit. It played shop bought cd's but most of the burned one's it didn't like. But the funny thing is it played my computer burned one's ok when the car was new but just got worse and worse at playing them until it was unable to do so. My dealer was helpful and after demonstrating the problem they ordered a new head unit which took about a week to arrive. It was changed promptly and the problem was cured. It played all my cd's again, including home burned ones. It also always played mp3's from my mp3 player when it was plugged in, but not from the cd's. After the unit was changed it played those again too. My current Fabia car has the Dance unit in it and it also has no problem playing all cd's from whatever source and mp3's.

I would imagine if you take xmans advice you will get no problem in getting it fixed. Just explain the situation and don't go threatening legal action straight away. The case will be new to them and they will want to look into it before committing to a solution. As you reported the error during warranty, it's likely they could play ball in some way but this may depend on exactly what you can prove about when you reported it to the dealer. Good luck anyway and let us know what you manage to achieve.

Many thanks for the above. I've written to Skoda as follows. Let's see what they say. Cheers - Joe

Dear Skoda,

I purchased a Skoda Fabia from Slaters, Abergele in September 2009.

Although I was very pleased with the car, I was not pleased with its Skoda Dance CD audio unit.

Intermittently, and particularly when the car has an unwarmed interior, the unit will not play CDs and comes up with a “CD ERROR” message. This has happened since the car was new. I took the car back to Slaters to query this twice during the first year and once more in its 3rd year.

On each occasion, as the car was warm, most of the time, the CD played and I was told that it wasn’t a fault. In addition, the unit will not play copied CDs or data CDs of mp3 files. Slaters told me it was never designed to do this. How one could have a unit designed to play mp3 without being able to read a pressed CD is beyond me.

I guess I should have been more assertive about this problem during the warranty period but I wasn’t and accepted the situation at that time.

However, I have now found, via the Briskoda.net forum that this problem does exist and that you have replaced defective units such as mine.

Can you please replace my unit – it has never worked properly and I reported the problem twice during warranty to no avail. At this stage in my complaint, this would be a matter of goodwill on your part.

For your information, I worked at Skoda’s Mlada Boleslav plant between 2006 and 2008 as an English Teacher to executives and others.

Many thanks in anticipation of your favourable reply.
