Day Running Lights

Featured Replies

Evening all, short time viewer, first time poster. New owner of a 2010 Octavia Estate 1.6 Diesel Elegance.

Noticed there was a 2nd set of bulbs in the front fog lights and duly did the manly thing and consulted the manual! Cue searching the forums on day running lights.

Basically they dont come on. I dont have the Maxidot system, so figured I'd need to get the dealer to sctivate them, then I can turn on and off using the lighting stalk as per the manual.

BUT....tonight I thought I'd try turning it off using the atalk method, and it dinged at me. Then turned it on, and it dinged again. Presume thats the indication it was successful, but still no lights. Bulbs are not tested, but look to be ok. Presume if they were blown I'd have a warning anyway....

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

Someone may have disabled with vcds otherwise you'd have a bulb fail warning

Is that disabled the lights or disabled the warning? Bulbs look ok anyway...its just a bit odd.

DRL's

Sounds like they still need activating using either VCDS or the dealer.

I think the confirmation 'dong' remains whether they are activated or not?

Humm...makes sense I guess. I mean why make it simple haha...

I still dont get why they'd fit particular lamps with the extra bulbs and NO way of turning them on without plugging it in....

Because they can charge you £40+ to plug in the computer.

It was very hit and miss. Some left the factory with them enabled but turned off, some left the factory with them enabled and turned on but most appear to have been delivered with them deactivated.

The requirement for DRL's was introduced in 2011, well after the MkII FL Octavia was introduced.

It seems even Skoda themselves were confused about the regulations. They fitted them but didn't turn them on, instead allowing them to be turned on by the dealer at a later date if required.

Don't pay for them to be activated, this would be crazy.

Wait until it is next in for service and ask them to do it then, the car is plugged in to the diagnostics for the service anyway so it's only a couple of extra clicks!

Oh no...I wont pay for them to be turned on haha! Ill wait till its next in, or looking at getting a towbar anyway so itll need plugging in then.

Thanks for your help guys

My dealer wouldn't charge at all if I went in for something like that, shame all are not the same! They even gave me a free winter check last year and a free proper Christmas tree. All before I had ever been a paying customer! :D Now that is service!

Just been in to get them activated, as well as potentially come home lights (tho wasnt sure if this was available as not auto lights) and also switch off the double unlock feature. The technician couldn't find any of them! He did reckon he found an option for cornering fogs so activated those, although they don't do anything! I want to check the fuse but cant decipher the picture in the fuse bo! Any more ideas anyone?

I have a similar car to you but it does have the maxidot computer. My dealer activated the DRLs for me (no charge) when the car was a few months old. This added DRL selection as a menu option on Maxidot. At that time, if you read the threads on this Forum, there was a lot of ignorance within the Skoda network; some Dealers enabled DRL without fuss, others didn't know how or said it was not a feature of the car.

My car was delivered in May 2010 (new) so if your car is that age or younger then it must be possible to activate the DRLs. I think they are a very good safety feature - maybe you should try another Dealer

Find another dealer. Unbelievable.

The single / double unlock via the remote is as basic as it gets. If he couldn't manage this then I wouldn't be trusting the guy to change my oil.

Activating the DRL's is equally as simple (but likely to be a far less frequesnt request). Ring the dealer up and complain. They should then offer to take another look when you are next passing.

Whatever they say I am 100% positive the single unlock and activation of DRL's is possible on your car.

Cornering fog lights only work at speeds under 30mph and when you have dipped headlights turned on.

Either turning the wheel or indicating turns them on/off.

However judging by what you've been through so far I wouldn't be suprised if the wally in the dealer hadn't even managed to activate these properly!

Good luck!

If you have a look in the 'diagnostics and vcds' section of the site, there is a 'pinned' topic towards the top of the forum which lists members all over the country who have vcds and are willing to help others out.

In the defence of your dealer, I don't think their system is as user friendly as VCDS and it's common to hear of them failing to do these things. Not that it's really an excuse.

Phil

The dealers VAS system, from when they showed me it in a dealers, will guide them step by step and is all click through unlike VCDS which you delve right into coding.

Either their VAS isn't up to date, or they should be banned from touching VAS.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but couldn't resist the opportunity to turn the question on it head in respect of an unfulfilled post I made on an Audi forum.  I think briskodians are a more helpful community anyway.

I want to turn off the (headlamp) DRLs on a new A6 (C7) but can't find a logical place to look in VCDS.

I also want to set the set the service interval to "variable" as the dealer set it to fixed and only told me at handover.  The bloody car is too damn clever and you have to do something within the Instruments section to change it rather than do it through a Service Interval Reset.  As I've only done 200 miles so far, the reset isn't a problem if only I knew how to do it using my official VCDS cable (and v12.12)  which I only bought for what I thought were simple changes.

If MikeH was still on the North West I'd drop in and see him as he's been really helpful previously, but if any of you guys happen to know how to help a VCDS novice, please shout up.  I know, I could post in a VCDS forum, but know most of you better...

Apologies again for the hijack, but the dealer is 150 miles away and its about 10k miles until the next planned visit.

Oh, and gadgetman, my Tunit might fit your Sharan if you're interested...

I definately reckon you'll have more luck over in the dedicated VCDS forum. A lot of the regular VCDS users / owners are over there and will know straight away.

If the Audi system works as it does with the Skoda system then the DRL's are controlled from within 09 - Central Electronics.

Can the DRL's be turned on / off using the Indicator stalk?  Think I read it somewhere

Thanks for the advice guys, will head over to the vcds forum. On the plus side they cleaned the car for me. :-D
