Jeez, just watched that video

Frightening!

Good job it was a car and not a biker it hit

Ok, I have personally decided to get myself a dash cam for when my new car is delivered, so a couple of questions for anyone with a Mk3 that might have a dash cam installed already:

Has anyone wired one into a Mk3 on a permamant basis, if so, how did you do it?  My pet hate is wires running around everywhere, so if I can mount it and run the wires to a proper feed or something rather than a cigarette lighter or something then that would be great.

I have seen some dash cams say that they turn on and off automatically when the car is turned on/off etc, anyone know how this works, or does it depend on it being wired into something that is a switch live?  Or if it runs from a cigarette lighter socket or a USB socket does it only run while that is on, if so, do the sockets in the Mk3 go on and off with the ignition, or do they stay live, or do the go off after a set amount of time?

Also, just out of curiosity, those that have a dash cam installed, do you find yourself driving more cautiously?  I mean, as you know you are being filmed do you relax and just go with speed limits, road restrictions etc where as previously you may of done a few MPH more than the limit, taken the odd risk or something?  Also, do they just record video or do they record audio as well i.e. conversations in a car or can you turn that function off?

Having read through the Dash Cam thread on here through doing a search it seems the Mobius camera comes with reasonably good feedback for a reasonable price, so chances are I would purchase that one.

Just a couple of questions I had about the Mk3 and a dash cam so seeing this thread was opened up earlier today thought worth asking in here.

Thanks in advance.

I have started using a dash cam I picked up from eBay for £16 slimline with folding screen It's great for the money with good quality pictures, date stamp and easy to use. Not sure of the make although it's obviously Chinese. I use it to capture the idiots on my commute from Cardiff to Bristol along the M4.

I note the comment about heated screens I will have to check when my new vrs TSI with heated screen turns up in Dec.

Can you post some sample video and a link to the unit you bought?

Thanks.

James there are several ‘walk through’ threads already on here, granted not on a MKIII but the process is identical.

Mine is wired through a ‘fuse tap’ directly to the fuse box, a switched live was used, this powers an additional cigarette socket located next to the fuse box, the wire is then run up the A post behind the trim and behind the roof lining, so it is all but invisible from the drivers seat.

Most people tend to drive better with them fitted - no point having something recording the fact that you were driving like an arse is there?

The MemoryMap Snooper DVR-1 Vehicle Drive Recorder at £150 might be worth a look? (linky)

It uses GPS accurately to record speed, -date, time & position as well as monitoring any impact from 3 separate directions.

I have tested a few dash cams and would not recommend anything less than one which records in full1080 HD

I currently run a Blackview 400 and am very impressed with the quality and settings options - bought mine when Bossfox was running his 1st Group Buy. Am about to buy another to fit to the rear screen.

I would suggest the Blackvue 380 which does all you need for around £160-£170.

Out of interest, since fitting them to our fleet vehicles the accident rate has dropped by around 40% and we are on target to save 25% on our insurance premium this year.  (£40,000 saving vs £10,000 spent on the cameras.)

It's turning out to have been a very good investment.

This is the one I bought. I will try to add a clip but don't hold your breath.

If you can upload a clip to youtube and paste the link into here I for one would find that most helpful in making a decision about getting a dashcam.

Thanks

  • 2 months later...

Cam all wired in and here is a test run.......

Not sure if I have all the settings quite right but this is from a blackvue 400.

Its currently turning itself the right way around lol (I didnt want to see the wires so technically I think it records 'upside down' lol)

And hopefully this is a night time one.

Any settings or up/down placement suggestions anyone?

Turn it upside down :)

I set my cam to show only the bonnet of the car - it removes the glare from the dash and gives you a better field of view.

LOL it'll turn itself the right way up in a bit. Its the way I wanted it set up in the car. Didnt want the wires on my side of the rear view mirror. So I should try and aim the camera up a bit more then?

I mounted them at the top of the car (to the left of the rear view mirror) and pointed them so the front edge of the bonnet was visible.  Got no glare from sunlight bouncing off the black dashboard at all.

Quality looks awesome though.

Which reminds me - I promised a write up on installing dash cam's in the 2013 vRS and the Monte Carlo... Better get onto that.

Thanks for the photo. Think mine is a very similar height but much closer to the glass which is maybe why I'm getting more reflection? I shall continue to tinker with it :)

I can only echo the above. BF recommended the 380 to me after I missed his group buy which I got from smartcam direct for around the sameprice after he tipped me off! It's quite unobtrusive -SWMBO hasn't spotted it yet and it's been fitted for over a month now! If I was being pedantic the only downside I've noticed is that the ring lighting that comes on as it goes through its set up stage to show its working is on the left so the driver doesn't see it, as it sits nicely behind the rear view mirror but as its a quality piece of kit I've slipped into fit and forget mode now.

This month's "Computer Shopper" (a good magazine) has a comparative review of several lightweight video cameras although not specifically dash cams. Worth a look.

That is a little low down as it's using the suction mount - I did buy some stick on mounts which are a lot smaller as they were "recommended" by Amazon, but these turned out to be the wrong one's and the camera is VERY loose in the fitting.

The company did try to contact me and advise me of this, but I didn't notice the emails through Amazon.

I will be ordering the correct mounts and the other correct cams - the one's fitted now will be going rear facing and the new ones (with GPS logging) will go into the front in place of these.

  • 1 year later...

Have just decided to get myself a cheap cam, the Eprance G1W. To save me hunting the forums, is there an easy take of point for a ignition on feed from the fusebox on the drivers side on the Octy 3, as I have seen on the Octy 2 thread ?
