Who needs a diesel!

Featured Replies

With the ever increasing fuel prices and everyday living costing more and more, I thought i'd post this pic from a recent trip to York in my Octy VRS for anyone who might be thinking of selling up in search of something more economical.

Think i'd be hard pushed to find any other car with this performance return this kinda MPG. Wasnt just a silly reading from the gauge either, filled tank again at the other end and worked it out manually and it was basically spot on :)

This wasnt the highest figure either, final journey finished on 51.7

HAHA yeh it wasnt the most thrilling drive. Sat at 65mph most of the way and the roads are fairly flat too. Still not bad for a 100 mile drive. Only managed 46mpg on the way home on the Sunday though :)

Not quite as good as yours

Just think, the diesel would have been 10-15 mpg better again.

'Think i'd be hard pushed to find any other car with this performance return this kinda MPG'  - You either have one or the other.... You weren't using any of the performance when you got this mpg.

Hit 40 mpg once in mine but normally get around 32 mpg in mixed driving which I'm very happy with, given the performance of the car.  No other large(-ish) car I've had comes close for fuel economy, the best I used to get from a variety of two litre cars was about 27 mpg.

That's my best as of yet however I do have these moments on private roads this is average speed over 60 ish miles

Show me about 2000 miles of driving, based on fuel bought / price paid, and I will be more believing. :D

I'll have to maintain my scepticism until then.  I do this in the mongrel and although the gauge often says 60+, in reality mpg averages out at about 48.  The more tanks I do, the more accurate the average becomes.

I can't remember the exact number on my saddo spreadsheet, but my long term average is 36mpg. Although most of this is my 7mile drive to work. Can get 40mpg average on pump over a tank when driving on motorway.

Pretty happy as people say for the performance and practicality. Shame the MK2 and 3 don't seem to hit better real world numbers.

Maybe those 5 valves per cylinder was worth it after all...

51mpg  :giggle:

Sat at 70mph (real speed, not speedo) I get 60 on the computer so about 56 realistic.

Performance on the other hand...

Best I've done 40mpg on trip to scotland and must I've had from a tank of petrol is 440 miles. To get 50 mpg I'd probably need a different car.

Ooh that is good, you swine :)

I started at Uni as a mature student in September, and hence skint. I drive my Octy VRs on a 70-mile round trip each day, mostly on motorways.

Obviously for me fuel economy is paramount, so I spend most of my drive at an indicated 55 in lane 1 with all the truckies!

Ok, mine has had a re-map, but I thought I was doing well at getting high 40's on my computer.

Obviously I must try harder...

Side note: the MPG calc on this car has been the least accurate of all the cars ive owned ;)

best "actual" economy ive had over a tank has been 35 - and that was with the trip computer reading well over 40.

The most I ever got from my VRS was 44mpg.... and lots of boredom

Our cars made for speed not for max MPG

Push acceleration pedal and feel happy with your beautiful vRS

Anybody who ain't getting great mpg I urge them to look at there thermostat..I know it's been covered many times..

:)

But my octy was showing 1/2 way on the temp gauge..but in reality it wasn't getting about 78c

(Logged with vagcom and forge ecu monitor)

I replaced it and wow..the mpg shot right up..and surprised me somewhat.

if you ever get lowest mpg thread going id spank ya all

did you do the temp sensor or just the thermostat?

just the thermostat

If you're getting that sort of MPG all the time, it's a waste owning a vRS. You may as well just get a dci Clio, it'll do better MPG and it'll only cost you £30 a year tax

You need some VCDS calibration doing Col :)

Although the number of people who drive petrol turbos and don't want it adjusting always amuses me. Is that the optimistic 'head in sand' approach? ;)

what if they want to drive sensibly in the week on the work commute, and enjoy the car at the weekend?

am guessing the clio doesn't have the boot the octavia does either..
