  • The manual for our Leon explicitly says that fitting lower speed rating winter tyres is fine, either T, H or V, just don't exceed the maximum speed. Went for T rated ones and I don't think swmbo will

  • TudorM, i will post pics when the car arrives! Mild winters in Romania? Then you must be a Ursus maritimus! Becaus i was freezing my balls of when i worked in Romania!

Like the ATS stuff, nice choice :)

Something with quite an open spoke design, that's not too intricate so they're easy to clean and the dirt and salt don't have places to hide.

I managed to get them from Oponeo for £110 per wheel, they're now £152 and have a long waiting list for them and you can't get the one's I have as they no longer do ET 50's.

You can get them for £489 from: http://www.alloywheels.com using a VW Golf Mk6 as the vehicle.

I have been trying to source a set of steel wheel for my 1.4TSI and keep being told the wheels are not available.

SUK told me I need 6j x 15 195,65,15 tyre or 6j x16 205,55,16  no mention of ET.

I've just bought a set of 17" tyres for my omega, with a view of getting some 17"s as winter wheels for the vrs. Great thread and love ats stuff!

Vector all seasons on 17's all year round here. look good and the grip is snowflake good.

I don't understand why the steels from the Octy 2 are not compatible according to Skoda?

Same PCD, same ET AFAIK

I have a 16" Steel spare with mine fitted with a 205/55R16 tyre, I'll get the part number off of it tomorrrow and see what it matches to.

Obviously no good for a vRS, but should fit all other models fine.

If you have all of the info I can recommend www.willtheyfit.com

+/- 2.5% diameter change seems to be the accepted practice for changing your wheels.

Try phoning home for ET.  :giggle:

My problem is I do not have the car yet, it's either at Emden or on its way to Grimsby.  I wanted to put winters straight on to it.

You can get a set of simple alloys with tyre from mytyres for not much more than steel wheels and tyres.

I have just tried  and there was no reply :wall:  :giggle:

I went through the same process - bought a set of winter wheels and tyres for my 1.2 TSI DSG still in the works, and went for the 195/65 R15 set - the ET is 43 for the 6J x 15 steel wheel.

The owner's manual on page 234 will also confirm this.

I guess the thing to be aware of with winter tyres is that if you have the 205/55 R16 tyres fitted on the 6.5J 16 wheels, then you will not be able to use snow chains with the 6.5J 16 wheels, should you decide to go for the 205/55 R16 winter tyres.

One of the reasons apart from cheaper price and narrower tyre profile therefore better grip onsnow and ice, I went for the 195/65 R15 winter tyres myself.

Thanks for the information.

I will have to go for the 16" wheels, all the 15 inch tyres are rated at 210 km/h max and the 1.4TSI is max rated at 215 km/h.  the 1.2TSI engine is rated at 196 km/h max making 15 or 16 inch tyres possible.

I am not sure where I would stand Insurance wise putting lower speed rated winter tyres onto my car? Going for the 16" I can put v rated tyres on with a max speed of 240 km/h.

I will put some H-rated Conti 850's on my vRS when it arrives shortly and when I contacted my insurer (Direct Line) they were fine about it.

The question you have to ask yourself is are you reallgoing to go around like a hooligan in snowy & icy conditions, are you going to do 100 mph in snowy & icy conditions, hopefully the answer is an emphatic NO, so you will be fine with slightly lower speed rated tyres.

Just refer your insurer to the ABI and AA who both advise that the fitment of winter tyres of a type approved by the manufacturer do not constitute a modification, and should have no impact on your premium.

Trundlenut I think maybe insurance companies would disagree ,I know what you say makes sense ,but we live in a no common sense world

Then they are going against manufacturers spec and what the ABI say, so I would be changing insurer.

Should be OK, if not for about £10-12 you can buy 4 x 3mm universal wheel spacers on Ebay to get you to ET 51.

PS. When did you get the Mk 4 vRS?  ;)
