  • Having never fitted them before I was hoping to go super sonic with winter wheels  , on here there have been people who have had issues with insurance companies and winter wheels and tyres.

  • The manual for our Leon explicitly says that fitting lower speed rating winter tyres is fine, either T, H or V, just don't exceed the maximum speed. Went for T rated ones and I don't think swmbo will

  • TudorM, i will post pics when the car arrives! Mild winters in Romania? Then you must be a Ursus maritimus! Becaus i was freezing my balls of when i worked in Romania!

Et 48 is standard on 16" wheels i do belive!

It's what my dealer told me when i asked for ET on 16" winter wheels..

I am convinced, save a bit of cash and go for the 15"" 195/65/15 tyres with a H rating.

I am now wondering If my car managed to get on the Schedule Highway that arrived at Grimsby this afternoon from Emden.

Should be OK, if not for about £10-12 you can buy 4 x 3mm universal wheel spacers on Ebay to get you to ET 51.

PS. When did you get the Mk 4 vRS?  ;)

Einpresstiefe. What does ET mean?

ET is einpresstiefe meaning offset and gives the amount of mm that a wheel sits from it’s mounting point. When the offset is 0 the mounting point is exactly in the middle of the wheel. The lower the offset size the further the wheel sticks out. For example, if your car stock offset is 40 and you installed wheels with an offset of 10, the wheels would stick out 30 mm more than stock. The basic tolerance for different offset sizes is 5 mm.

Unless I am missing something, 3mm spacers will reduce the ET48 to ET45, not increase to ET51 (and thus wheel will stick out further).  Also depends on the width of the wheel.

That said I have 7.5J x 17 ET40 winter wheels fitted with an ABE* certificate.

ABE
ABE is the abbreviation for  Allgemeine Betriebs Erlaubnis (Vehicle Type Approval). What an ABE means effectively, is that you don’t have to make an extra trip to MOT and pay 50 € for a certificate, but just  can put a copy of the approval in the glove compartment and drive off, provided no other requirements have to be fulfilled.

Still carnt decide which winter wheels to buy,,,too many to pick from,

Fancy these but dont know what they would look like after winter not being washed and all the bloody salt

i would not recommend these wheels for winter as the polished edges will not last due to the salt, a really good company who i have used for years is Turriff Tyres. http://www.turrifftyres.co.uk really helpfull staff and carry loads of stock at great prices.

They trade on Ebay under a different name (Premier Wheels) who are purportedly based in Fleet (Hants) and when I sent an email enquiring about two sets of wheels I got no answer, so for their damned trouble I took my custom elsewhere, yes it cost me more & a little hassle, but I got a set of quality ATS wheels for my winter tyres.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's best to most just make a note of it, a few will charge you.

Direct Line & Privilege who I've used for the last few years have been fine with it.

BBS SR on the way, hope they will fitt!

Didn't you check before ordering?

I did, ;)

To fussy and hard to clean lol but will look great

Won't they be expensive as well ?

Standard the 1.4 TSI came with 5x112 6.5J  ET46.

Also when I asked RIAL in Germany they answere this is going to fit the car:

RIAL Milano-6,5x16-ET45-U2-LK5/112,0-NB57,1-VAG

You can see the ET45 is not a problem if it's lower than ET46. Also there is no issue if the ET will be 47 or 48. I think it can go easily up to 50 and no issues will occur.

Got some Audi speed line 1124 wheels off e bay 7Jx16H2 112x5 ET45 for my yeti but never used them. Just got an Octavia 3 estate 4x4 tdi and have just put them on the car. I checked the size on a comparison type calculator which I found the link for on this site and it said there were no problems fitting this size ( the 7 inch x 16 size wheel is an option) on this car

The alloys cost £98 altogether. I bought two of them for £18 but they did need some rubbing down and some painting which has tidied them up and they look quite smart on the car now I'll try and post some pics later

Be interested to see some pics; no news of any sort on mine as yet :S

Like yourself I have 7Jx16 ET45 rims for our Yeti and enquired with Skoda UK if I could use them on the Octy, they said no, despite my own calculations suggesting otherwise. Also spoken with the tyremen down in Hull and they agree they would fit.

So just debating whether to use the existing steel rims with new tyres or try sell them and get the Skoda approved rims instead.

Regards,

How? They look dead easy to clean, they're hardly a cross spoke wheel like an old skool BBS RZ.

Almost certainly worth every penny. Looks like a new design for BBS.

Can't understand Skoda's thought process at all. They don't approve the 7x16 ET 45 rims but do approve the 7x17 ET49 Denom alloys, very strange. All the online calculators(2) I have used state that the 7x16's will fit without any problems and I haven't encountered any.

I think if Skoda list them as winter rims they use a maximum of 6J so that there is clearance for chains to be fitted.

I did, ;)

Did they fit when they arrived? What ET were they?

They have arrived, but my car havent...

So stil a few weeks until i know 4 shure..

OK ta, I'm really interested as to how you get on. I noticed that the Neptunes for my Mk. II FL are ET50, but don't know if I can apply the same assumption to a Mk. III if ordering 17" wheels.

They are ET48 and should be bolt on.

No i dont think they are expensive 120 euro each isnt bad at al.

The wheels I got for mine are 7.5J x 17" ET 50, they fit perfectly. Got them from: http://www.wheels.oponeo.co.uk/

I just can't get the darn protective blue plastic off the hubs though & I don't want to damage them.

Thanks Rakash. I was looking at them on www.wheelbasealloys.com as a package with Nokian WR A3 winter tyres, at £1249.00. Sounds expensive compared with what you said in Euros.
