Stop start what's the issue?

Featured Replies

Just thought I would start this off.

I had stop start on my Fabia Greenline and did not have problem with it - amazingly given how rubbish the two engines were.

My understanding is that stop start is primarily there to reduce co2 emissions and help meet targets and then to help with mpg.

If you look at how the official mpg figures are measured stop start only comes into play for a very small percentage of the measurement.

Oh and I have my tin hat on and bullet proof vest

Nice!

I like it, the engine stops cos it's not needed so saves you money. Some people just don't like anything though and just love to complain.

It's pretty obvious where SS is beneficial and where it is not. Anyone who drives in stop start traffic frequently will see a bigger benefit than others who don't. Just turn it off if you don't like it.

I've never owned a car with ss however a lot of hire cars have it.

I can see why some people don't like it. Especially as you don't appear to be able to preeminently turn it off.

However I like ss. My journeys generally don't make much use of it as any traffic is generally still moving if not very quickly. The reason I like it is for when you're stuck in a traffic jam it removes that should I shouldn't I conundrum.

Plus the fact the vrs diesel is £30/year tax is always a plus as well.

Might not be saying this if it breaks mind.

You just have to watch your "since start" MPG on a commute into work that involves a number of stops at lights to see the big benefits of SS.

When the engine is left running and you turn the SS off.... the average MPG plummets. Each stop at a red light drops the average by around 5mpg.

Utilise the SS and the average MPG doesn't drop at all.

So if I have more than 8ish red lights I should get into negative mpg? :P:D

Depends whether you nick petrol from the cars around you.

Sorry I don't know what the point of the original post is here? The OP mentions they had start/stop and it worked fine. Then that it's there to reduce emissions (errrr yeah of course). Is there a problem with it On the Octavia then??

There's a button in front of the gear stick to turn it off if you don't like it???

Sorry have I missed the point of the post??

P.s the 2nd post is inspired lol

I've never had the technology but it does seem to be something that's erring towards starter motor replacement after a few years?

There are six places on my commute into work where I can see that stop-start would kick in.......and six on the way home.

That's twelve a day x five times a week.  Add to that the two starts (leaving home / leaving work) each day and you're into the realms of 72 starter motor actions a week.

Or maybe starter motors these days are more beefed up than those I remember where you had to take a hammer and screwdriver to to unfreeze them?

This tech is fine on new cars I've driven cars with it and quite like it, but a few years down the line after the warranty has expired, you have more overstressed components that are far more expensive to replace than standard ones. Which is only good news for the manufacturer.

One benefit of stop start, if you stall the engine, it restarts automatically without turning the ignition off/on, brilliant!

Unless you're a ***very*** bad driver, stalling a diesel is nigh-on impossible

Start stop is only to reduce the emission and to lower the CO² taxes of a vehicle nomore, this system is one of the lowest cost to reduce CO², nomore engineering needed just some additional electronics.

Low CO² taxes = big business

1 gram can be the difference in a lower scale and less taxes, we all like   lower taxes so why not on our cars?

Easy if you've just come from a DSG, believe me!

Touché!

The best I've ever achieved on my commute (and I've only got this once) was 60mpg using SS, the average I get is between 50 and 55mpg. The worst I have seen when SS was off was 43mpg. If I'm unlucky I have to pass through 7 sets of traffic control lights and another 5 pelican/toucan crossings.

Factoring in that the average increases between sets of lights regardless, it is a 5mpg loss at each set of lights.

Andy

Only had the system on loan cars so far but not found it an issue; once you get used to it. Be interesting to see how we get on with the feature on the Octy III on a more long term basis :wonder:

The reason for the tread was, when you mention about stop start a lot of people say I don't like it what if the car does not start.

On here you will get questions of how do I permanently turn stop start of as if it is some sort of demon.

The tech works really well, interestingly I was told when I bought the Fabia with it on the dealer could not see it coming to DSG cars - how wrong was he.

The only issue I had with stop start was in winter when the car was stopped for a while and the heater starts to blow cold air into the cabin instead of warm.

I'm not keen on it on a diesel due to the vibrations on stopping and starting.  Not so bad on a petrol (it's on the 318i I'm piloting at the moment) though and almost unobtrusive.  Annoying on a DSG though but as has been said, there's a "On/Off" button if you don't like it.

Start/Stop starter motors are generally beefed up versions to cope with the increased usage so should last about as long as a "normal" one.

It turns my heated seat off too! :-(

It is odd at first on a DSG, getting used to how hard you can press the brake before the SS cuts in takes a day or two, but once you learn how to control it it is useful.

Mine seems to cut in even with a cold engine, before the temp gauge needle has even moved from the coldest position. I thought the engine was supposed to get to a minimum temp before SS became active?

Having the heated windscreen on stops it from kicking in, but not the heated rear screen oddly?

That's a literal bummer.
