Who's cut their pd160 flap?

Featured Replies

Looking into panel filters or a cone in a box and seen a few people mention they've cut the flap from the pd160 trumpet. Who's done this? I know it could potentially let some water in (I'd be surprised if it let in enough to damage the engine though) but it does look quite restrictive actually. Leave well alone or open it up?

Me!

Its for protection against snow supposedly!

I ran it with no issues on 3 pd130's

That will do me then, I will chop it out tomorrow

I got rid of mine with no problems

Cut mine out too! The flap seemed to deflect larger pieces of debri like flies ect before entering the air box as well as snow.

Since cutting it out my green cotton filter is needs cleaning more often with a collection of insects that would keep David Bellamy interested for weeks!

Never underestimate how hydro lock can affect an engine.

Hydrolock occurs when a volume of liquid greater than the volume of the cylinder at its minimum (end of the piston's stroke) enters the cylinder. Since most common liquids are incompressible the piston cannot complete its travel; either the engine must stop rotating or a mechanical failure must occur.

Usually found when a vehicle drives through water that is 'too deep', ingests water via the air intake and the engine will stop, usually with bent rods.

I know about hydro locking and I'd never drive through deep water I'm asking about general driving as in rain etc

as daft as it sounds i would imagine vw ag spent thousands developing that flap

Cut mines out ages ago.

The flap aint required!

I've ran carbonios before (in fog light)

The position of the fabias intake is well high (remember the fabia is almost a 4x4) so it will be fine

Yes but it would be rude not to modify it! Lol '

What flap is this?

/\ you don't want to know!

All im saying is..... Nothing worse than a big flap in the way

F-er-nar! :giggle:

Mines been out for years

Mine is out.

Am back to the sdt 130 pipe now and I get water in there. I use std filters hence how I know.

I have to stay well back and take it easy on bad days.

Need to get a new one really.

Never had any trouble ingesting water. Just gets to the filter.

Car goes fine. Have to swap filters more often tho

Does the pd 160 intake make it louder or just help air flow?

Meant to increase air flow

Neither.

Cut the front of the car off if you want, it won't make any difference, it's the turbo shoving the air in, not the atmosphere.

Surely if there is a restriction and the turbo can't efficiently suck in more air then a bigger allowance of air would help things? Like sucking on a straw as fast as you can, then doing the same but by covering the end of the straw slightly with your finger.

I'm not entirely sold on this though, not for the price anyway haha

I can see the sience behind it and it is quite a bit bigger but I can't tell a difference with it fitted. I'd probably pay about £20 for it but how much they go for is ridiculous

surely the biggest restriction is on the TIP where it turns 90 into the turbo inlet really.

don't think I would wast any money on that bit of plastic it is just a fashion accessory really prob cost vw 20P to design and make it just to be different to other models (think ac off switch on golf 5 and blank button on oct11)

Why does the pd160 have twice the size air intake than the pd130?

Pd130 left pd160 right

Surely VAG thought it was required / made a difference

To go on with a bigger turbo yea but this little one on the fabia has ample flow.

Also the 160 pipe is big and just fits. Bit of a pita imo for fitting. Also rubs on things

Cable ties!

Suppose i had a bigger turbo to match too :)
