Close shave with 'WhatsApp'

Featured Replies

Been getting emails of this shower recently and became very tempted to click on the 'play' button to hear my messages

Not an I.T. buff by any stretch of the imagination, but am mighty glad I googled it first.

Brief Analysis
The email is not from WhatsApp. Clicking the "Play" button will open a malicious website that tries to trick users into downloading malware to their device.

Really, why do they bother and do this? Pointless disruptive damaging sick and sad.

I don't think you even have to give your email address for WhatsApp do you? Odd.

iPhone users don't have to worry about viruses :)

Guess what, no viruses on mine either...........

They are probably trying to hack into your email accout. They then divert all your emails to them wipe out your address book so you can't email people easily and send a begging letter to everyone in your contact list asking for money because your supposedly stuck somewhere. Any one who replies may then be tricked into sending 'you' money. By the time you twig and sort your emails out with your supplier they're hoping someone has taken the bait and sent them some money

If you've installed WhatsApp, try contacting them. Someone may have hijacked their account and uploaded a fake app

Lol yet :)

Just to be clear, WhatsApp on your mobile is not being directly attacked.  It's your email that's being scammed, by just pretending to be from WhatsApp, instead of the usual "Must Respond - Urgent message from your bank" - whatever.

One way you may see it on your mobile, is if you have synched your phone, to read the mail on your PC/Laptop.

However, it is likely your PC spam filter will trap & mark it as junk, so it never gets sent to your phone. Check your PC protection.

My "pretend message from WhatsApp" was received via my PC Hotmail account, dumped straight into the PC junk folder & never reached my Windows mobile. All the other "Clean" mail, synched from my Hotmail inbox to my phone as normal.

With hundreds of millions of WhatsApp users around, the scammers have just changed targets.  Sadly, some of us will fall for the increasingly realistic scams.  Don't get me started on the problems with text scammers.

Be very careful.  If it looks or feels dodgy, don't open, just delete.
