EGR Valve is OFF

Not trying to have a go at anyone but why do people want to block it/physically disable it when VAG-COM does 99.9% of it for FREE & anything else the EGR valve is used for i.e "anti shudder valve" hopefully wont be affected as the EGR is still active and in use, just a lot less than before...

Btw on a seperate note I let my brother do a drive-by yesterday evening (when it was still light :D) and with his foot firmly planted to the floor again there was no visible soot & nothing on stand still revving either.

Can somebody confirm how detrimental a slight increase in combustion temperature would be before I have mine done tomorrow night? Ross?

I know the benefits, I knew of one downside being increased NoX emissions, but I don't know much about any other downsides. Help if you can please...:)

Should think the block could cope with a slight increase in combustion temps? Would any increase be reflected on the temp guage in the car?

The block will almost certainly cope with slightly higher combustion temps (as overfuelling with a remap/tuning box will cause them). Whether this can be safely done on top of disabling the EGR is an interesting question though! Wouldn't have thought you'd see it refelected in the water temp gauge, however VAG-COM may be able to monitor it?

Had it done 2 months ago now and nothing has changed, car is still smoother, gauges don't appear any different and smog has still not come back.

The best form of research - someone who's had it done for some time. My EGR blocking kit is staying on then. ;)

Good enough for me...:D

So if I read this right:

If you leave the engine long enough, the EGR circuit blocks itself up with gunk anyway, so all turning it off is doing is hastening this process.

My VAG-COM cable arrived yesterday, so I did this last night... Driving to work and back today, I noted a lack of smoke and also much smoother acceleration!!

I'm just waiting for it to go dark so I can finally adjust my xenons, which have been crap since lowering my car.

Quite looking forward to having it done now. Fish & Chips and EGR off...:D (it's a Blackpool meet - in case that seemed strange:rolleyes: )

Josh - Can you adjust the Xenons without the normal sort of garage alignment setup? I thought the were self leveling so would auto adjust after lowering. Be interested to see how you get on and have a look at mine.

Thats good news mate

Not quite (I think) - Its the inlet manifold which was all gunked up on my PD100 engine, with only 64000 miles on the clock. And this was "mainly" ;) blamed on the EGR valve recirculating burnt/dirty/sooty gases back into the engine to be combusted again. This is what gradually built up the gunk around the inside edge of the manifold. (I should also say the new PD130 inlet was also beginning to gunk up a bit with only 7000 miles on the clock! )

In theory, with no nasty burnt gases being recirculated, it will be 100% clean air going into the inlet manifold only. :) (unless air coming through the turbo gathers any kind of "dirt" - I don't think so myself)

HTH

The how-to on the Ross-Tech website advises that you can centre them using vag-com and then you can alter the height using the mechanical screws on top of the units.

You need to have the car fully tanked up with fuel, then find a perfectly flat bit of road, then go through the vag-com procedure. This will then centre your lights.

I need to do this, as even though I've moved the screws as much as they'll go, the lights are still really, really crap.

Basically, there is a sensor on the rear beam which senses how much load there is in the back of the car (by measuring how high up the rear beam goes). If this is constantly high (ie the car has been lowered), but the lights have not been re-centred, the module "thinks" that the car has a heavy load in the back, and therefore dips the headlights to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.

However, if the whole of the car has been lowered (and not just the back), the lights will constantly be dipped.

This is why it's neccessary to re-centre the xenons after lowering.

I went through all this with my Polo GTi... Twice! (once on springs and again when the coilovers went on!).

Sorry this has gone off topic... Maybe a moderator can split the thread and create a new thread for the discussion of fabia vrs xenon light adjustment!

Thanks Josh.

I don't understand what's the fuss about this mod, after all people have used this mod with TDI cars for years now, if there was a problem with it then surely the word was out by now. I turned mine off when the car was new, still running smooth as ever without any smoke (even with tuning box), driven approx 15000km with the car now..

I have found all this very interesting as I have a remap and ALOT of smoke. As I dont have to worry about the mot for 3 years, is there anybody in the NW who would be kind enough to sort mine?

The smoke is due to the software on your car, reducing the EBR may reduce it slightly

How much of a reduction in smoke can be expected from restricting the EGR? I appreciate this is not going to be easy to quantify, I just want some idea.

I asked my dealer to restrict mine (I even gave them a print out from the guides section) initially the smoke output seemed to increase - it was like driving around with a trail where I had been. However, after cleaning my air filter over the weekend, it seems to have dropped significantly. Not sure if its the air filter or different weather conditions on the way to work this morning (wet and colder than it was when EGR first done). It still puffs a bit when I put my toe down.

Is the guide still available?

To EGR disabling? If so, have a look at the link below on VRStu's excellent Fabia vRS site:

Fabia-vrs.com - Coding Options

Thanks very much for the link Denis,

I'm trying to do it on the Octavia VRS TDI and the LOGIN 11 box is called something else, I read on the RossTech site that this procedure doesn't work for the PD engines???

Now I'm confused.

I am led to believe that it works for PD engines up until 2005 - and usually not on the PD150
