EGR Valve is OFF

Featured Replies

After meeting up with EddyH last night to whom I must give a BIG THANKS  he managed to change a few settings on VAG-COM.

1. Auto-lock after 5 mph

2. Beep on lock/unlock

3. EGR Valve Restricted :D (Can't be turned off :o)

With the EGR Valve's use restricted the car idle's quicker and smoother, this is also the case when driving. It doesnt feel any faster but it does feel a LOT smoother.

The major benefit to doing this as far as I can tell is the reduction in smoke from the exhaust, before I could get the rear end of my Furby dirty in one trip because of all the soot coming out of the back. And now there is pretty much NONE which is excellent considering mine should/and was smoking quite a lot now when it was remapped.

All in all a .

I turned (lowered) this setting when mine was standard and didn't really notice any difference. Not really thought about seeing what it does after a remap.

Glad to help! :)

I'll have to try the EGR trick on the Ibiza once it's back to full health.

I spoke to Ross when he used to frequent the board. To me it didn't make a blind bit of difference but aparently it does play a part in lower combustion temprature in the cylinders, needless to say mine is now back upto what it should be.

Note : You may need to switch it back on for it's MOT to pass emmisions testing as well.

I didn't have any problem with my MOT emissions with the EGR valve turned down and a tuning box on the car :D

Chris

On the new setup the EGR doesn't EXIST! I got a blocking kit. ;)

Sometimes I wonder what the POSITIVE side of the EGR system is? My old PD100 EGR was just totally FULL of blank gunky stuff. :grumpy: And the PD130 one was also starting to accumulate it after only 7,000 miles. double :grumpy:

Apparently performance SHOULD be better with EGR blocked off. ;)

edit: Just read about keeping temperatures down in the engine itself.... interesting.

I have found all this very interesting as I have a remap and ALOT of smoke. As I dont have to worry about the mot for 3 years, is there anybody in the NW who would be kind enough to sort mine?

Just to add after another days worth of driving to work and back & on some spirited back roads there is no visible soot at all coming from the rear, this to date is the best mod I have done since remapping my car, NO SMOKE :D

Everything about the engine seems that little bit smoother now, ranging from the delivery of power through to engine clatter on idle.

This isn't a placebo effect, if you have a remapped car I would definately recommend trying this mod even if you are dubious about my comments :)

OK, so how do I do it?

Dave, looks like I'll be up in Fleetwood next Tuesday night / Wednesday. I f I am and someone has posted the instructions, I'll do it for you.

As mentioned before EddyH did mine but I assume on the Fabia atleast he followed the Briskoda guide

How does using VAG com compare to actually using a blocking off kit though? I have to admit I didn't see it when mine was fitted, I just had a phone call saying an EGR blcking kit came from Allard, and it was in my favour to fit it to prevent cr4p going back into the engine (at the slight expense of emissions, but like I care with a decat...)

Jon - Might be worth a call to Allard? I thought you were going to a while back? ;)

Very kind of you. I shall prepare some of the worlds finest fish and chips for your trouble, although Wed is the NW meet in Cheshire somewhere.

Oh, Jon! I might be able to get some piccies of the EGR blocking kit on mine if its something which is fairly accessible. I'm taking my camera with me tomorrow when I go for my "long weekend" with the car. ;)

How does it compare? well you can't turn it off or disable it :D As far as i'm aware you can only limit it to a point where it makes next to no difference at all, but if it comes MOT time atleast it can be just re-activated without too much fuss.

Mine's been disabled. ;) I'll have to get some pics or techie explanation as to how it was done though to explain properly.

All I know is I was sent a bit of "machinery" gubbins with my Turbo or FMIC and it has permanently shut off the EGR valve meaning no sooty nasty clogged up black bits will get re-circed into the engine again.

I'll have to post piccies of my "clogged up with black stuff" PD100 inlet manifold to truly show what I mean - You could literally get lumps of the stuff by running your finger along the inside of the manifold, and that was only after 65k.

Might have some more accurate visual aids tomorrow night. ;)

Glad to say it's effects are pretty much none existant now then, dont want the inlet manifold on mine to go like that!

Jason,

I too am quite interested in the EGR blocking kit form Allard... do you have the "race pipe" type thing too that does away with the EGR valve altogether?

..like the one shown in the attachment

I was wondering if this might give an engine fault code with it removed

Reading the guide on Briskoda it does give the impression that restricting it via VAG-COM minimises it's effect by about 99.9% anyway. I think it would be handy to have the option of just turning it back on via software as opposed to having to reconnect things physically if it were to come to MOT time.

Believe me when I say the EGR blocking AND a decat pipe doesn't have any effect on the TDI emmissions being close to failing the MOT test. ;)

I should know having had mine MOT'd twice with a decat pipe.

Matt - I'm not sure it looks like that - I don't remember anything so shiny and BIG with it, but will confirm tomorrow one way or the other. :D

Besides its not so much a emmissions test, its more of a 'smog' test isnt it?

The nice shiney pipe in the pic is a straight through pipe that does away totally with the EGR valve. This also means you get rid of the flap/valve inside the EGR, plus all the other gubbins inside it.

So the straight through pipe must improve air flow slightly..

The only thing is that I think the EGR valve also has a seperate function that ties in with the anti shudder valve when you switch off the engine...

nice piccie from allard attached shows EGR valve completely blocked off as well as the crankcase ventilator blocked off too...

what we need is piccied of your setup Jason... :D

Be interesting to see what you folks are saying next time a thread about George Bush and the Kyoto agreement comes up ...

what we need is piccied of your setup Jason... :D

Will take a look. I think though it literally was just something to keep it jammed shut, like a bit of plastic or something. However, as it came from Allard, I have little doubt its gonna do the job. :D

Most of the black crud in the engine is because of the breather circuit not the EGR. Best way to stop that would be to re route it to a catch tank.
