Winter wheels and tyres on today

Centres look good Silver  - my plan is still in development :)

What pressures are you running your 17" winters at? I'm running 34PSI all-round at the moment, but not sure if it's a little too high for the fronts....

  • I always find it amusing when any thread on winter tyres attracts the inevitable reply of   "I've never used winter tyres in my life and have absolutely not one iota of experience with them whatsoev

  • Those who don't understand Winter Tyres think they are ONLY for snow

  • The point of winter tyres is not to protect summer tyres. It is to protect your car (and it's occupants) by being safer in winter, along with enabling you to continue to drive when there is snow aroun

My winters have gone on today, fallen eurowinter hs 449 on 16 inch steelies.

Not sure if i like the black steelie look or should i buy some cheap wheel trims?

I would leave them...I put some Halfords wheel trims on the Wife's steel winter wheels and it now looks crap

The Caddy wheel bolt covers are a nice middle ground IMO - looks cleaner once you can't see the exposed bolts and wheel centres.

Would these fit on any steel wheel?  mine were not bought as vw type but generic ones from my tyres

They do...That's why I'm thinking of talking them off the wife's car.....Trouble is...she likes them!! :wall:  :giggle:

Looks good from the top:

But side-on it's not quite as good:

These are my set by the way, photo from last year when I bought them. Now freshly refurbed :)

If you pop them in the oven on a low heat, the gel badges should soften and sag to the correct contour. The plastic used has a low melting point. I did this on a badge I needed to put on a motorbike part. It worked a treat. Start low and work up the temperature though!

Took a look at my new wheels, happy with them .....look forward to seeing them on :-)

Embarrassingly... I've no idea!

I had the tyres put on the rims by a local trusted tyre fitter.

Whilst I was waiting he was banging on winters tyres left right and centre.

I've done 200 miles on them today and the car rides the same as it did on summers (same tyre size as winters) so I'm guessing all is well.

I'll check next weekend and report back!

Looking forward to the unveiling!

You could have anywhere between 15 and 40 psi based on experience.

My guy generally goes for 40 psi so you can let them down to what you want.

100% don't do cheap trims.

Like DRL's people will very quickly learn what undressed steelies represent.

Black steel rims = I've got winters fitted.

Plastic trims = I've had my alloys nicked and can't afford to replace them right now!

Nice idea, like your thinking

Might well give that a try :)

Only if u promised the missus u get her a new AGAR oven if u ruin the existing one :-)

Might be AGA ;)

And if they're not secured on properly Chris, they could mysteriously fall off one journey, or while parked up in a public place....

I fit my new winter wheels on Saturday and have the same dilemma. Do wheel trims serve a purpose in relation to protecting the wheel nuts at all, or will water just splash through anyway so that they are purely for appearance?

The caddy ones would solve the covering the wheel nuts problem but they look a bit more prone to be stolen than most as you couldn't use cable ties to make then trickier to pinch.

Not on an Octy but that's what I have at the moment.

But had a mad five minutes yesterday and bought these for the black barge:

Will have to see what they're like once they're on I guess
